Absolutely dog shit! Not recommended at all.

Story starts from were it ended, nothing too extraordinary MC forgets his mother and again started to fuck around, basically he only think from his dick, mopping over Eris left him, he got so delusion about it that he got ED well what would you expect from a pedophile.

animation was pretty mediocre in 2nd season only priority scenes were well animated.

Sound design was pretty medicore as well as the OsT, there's litrally nothing to expect anything from the MC.

Author need to just make a hentai it would be far better for him, everyone in the series is ... horny as fuck wanting to get laid.

Not recommended watching at all.

The story is the continuation of the 1st season. In this 2nd season, the main character (Rudy) is having a new journey and He got a new big problem for as a male human. It's quite hilarious to see him have a problem like that. You're gonna see a lot of comedy scene on this season.

The art of this anime is excellence! I like how they use color, art style, glow, and shadow. The most I like is when Rudy casts a spell during the battle.

I'm going to go ahead and refer to this as the "ED arc" because this season is a little bit more laid-back than the first.
The anime has moved through its original material very swiftly. Season 2 has a stronger emphasis on character development than the earlier, more action-packed Season 1. As it prepares the series for what comes ahead, it is a welcome change of pace.

The OSTs are fantastic, with spiral by LONGMAN standing out as a personal favorite. The animation is still great as it always has been.

I wouldn't say that I would really recommend this season if you were hoping for ... more action after season 1. Even though there are differing opinions about this arc in particular among fans, as a fan of the series, I'm generally satisfied.

New season new problems, but unlike other anime this one is a bit interesting. It's going over the Rudeus' depression from what he thinks was a break up with Eris. He's been scarred so much that he is now impotent whenever it comes to anything with women. Having actually read the manga I felt the story doesn't really get much more developed for world building this season, but some interesting things do happen at times. You could say this season's journey is about learning how to get over the girl he once loved, building a reputation for himself, and making new friends, but nothing world ... changing or story heavy. Though plenty of character development.

I'm surprised with how the story was playing out it made it more entertaining than I thought in the anime compared to the manga. The animation was definitely solid. Overall It's definitely feels like a minor downgrade from the previous season, but it's still good. 7/10

the current mushoku tensei arc is definitly a harsh one with rudeus being all depressed and borken. I can understand all the hate that the show is currently getting however this really depends on who is watching. For me personally, mushoku tensei is more than just some weird 2023 isekai. Given the time the light novel was started mushoku tensei was one of the first isekai and one of the best isekai animes. Furthurmore, the character relationships and the world building is one of the best. So many scenes have left me comparing my own family problems to what Rudeus deals with his dad and ... others. So many scenes have left me lamenting. I would even go as far as to comparing this current arc to evangelion and Shinji's character.

This show is so.. SO BAD. I just can't believe that it's considered peak fantasy by so many people. This season's starting arc was the worst part, I truly considered to rate the whole season 3/10 because of the sheer physical pain from it's storytelling. I'm not joking, can't imagine that there is even one single person who didn't cringe from Rudy's maniacal obsession over Roxy's panties. In every stressful or just really any emotional moment in the first arc, the panties must play a role - he squeeses them in his pocket or smells them, or just thinks of them. It's ... so pathetic and cringe, I just can't take it. And the story is centered around his pp not getting hard, because his ex-loli girlfriend (she's like 14-15? when they sleeped together and he's >30yo + 15 (in isekai world) - that's like totally acceptable by everyone who liked the show) dumped him. Sorry what? This is the peak storytelling now? Pedo main character in a crappy story about pp not getting hard because of trauma that girl thrice under his age gave him? And he is so dumb too: in the second part he couldn't figure out that it was Silphie all along for like 6-7 episodes.

It's just unbearable to watch alone, watched it with friend for some laughs, I guess it can be amusing to watch trashy anime sometimes. But the problem is that everybody sincerely likes this show for some reason and I just can't wrap my head around it. Author's incel world view just hits hard his storytelling and every aspect of character development becomes tainted by it. I loved the beginning of the first season, when they learned magic and were just exploring the world, it's rules and boundaries + all characters were likeable, now they all are trash plot devices for author's warped sense of "what's more dumb and toxically erotic that my setting and storytelling can endure".

If you want a truly great fresh fantasy series with good characters - go read Witch hat atelier or wait for the anime adaptation. Don't melt your brain watching this piece of crap that pretends to be a good fantasy.

Two parts of the first season were not that well, but just to watch this season, I would recommend people to somehow endure.

Maybe the best part of the series, human relations. It is always dynamic, sometimes unexpected and interesting, but especially this season, you can literally watch the way characters' relations whole day. I personally prefer this kind of aspects of series rather than cutting monsters into slices while jumping on a desert. In 1080p video settings, cities look amazing and majestic.

Rudeus' blindness (for two seasons) and the unnecessary fact, our character is actually 34 years old, female underwear collector, harms the enthusiasm to ... watch. If the main character had less this kind of odd personality, I would give 10/10 to this season.

I really wonder if the author just added the dying part of the first season to give the title ''isekai'' to the series. Do people think that if Rudeus was a kid, who born in a village house and learned magic is not realistic, but dying and talking to human god and starting to live as a wizard kid after reincarnation is realistic? It just makes the main character disgusting.

This is one of the BEST anime series in the last few years, and it deserves so much more attention by the community.

Why is this the best anime to come out in the last few years?
Two words - Character development

The anime has done an amazing job telling the story of Rudeus Greyrat and his adventures, but what makes it stand out is how realistic the emotions and thoughts are. The character development through the series has been one of the most compelling that this seasoned viewer has seen in many years of anime.

I would recommend this series to everyone as one of the best isekai ... anime series in the summer 2023 season at the least.

Just think, every sexual moment up till 2nd season has been centered around kids in some way in the show, but everyone IRL keeps hyping up the show and refusing to admit the problems. Last season Rudy f*cks around age 15. Rudy as an infant, watches others' sexual moments. Without spoiling this season, some sexual stuff happens that has far more screen time and intention to show the viewer. You don't get to argue "oh but in the show, you're an adult at 15". There's zero excuse to promote the show. I don't even remember what episode I stopped at this season, because it was ... so disgusting.

The second season (part 1) of Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation takes us several years into the future after the events of the first season. Rudeus is no longer a child, and in the initial episodes, we witness him maturing into his mid-teenage years. While the first half of the season is entertaining, it can be described as somewhat slow in terms of storytelling. Not much new is revealed, and Rudeus doesn't undergo significant character development. There are some exciting fights and, as always, stunning animation, but at times, they seem somewhat lacking in meaning. That said, the plot delves deeper into the main characters' recent ... romantic trauma and its unexpected consequences, although the foundation for these developments may feel a bit unsolidified (pun intended).

Apart from a few standout moments, the first half of the season doesn't quite capture the Rudeus we've come to cherish; instead, it feels like a lackluster imitation, almost as if the character growth from the first season has been undone. I find the inconsistency in Rudeus' character during these early episodes somewhat bothersome. While one could attribute this to his romantic drama, I still feel a bit disappointed by this apparent regression; your perspective on it may vary.

Fortunately, we don't have to endure this limp (okay I'll stop now) storytelling forever. The second half of the season delivers precisely what one would expect from Mushoku Tensei: engaging fights, humor, social interactions, and the witty Rudeous we adore. All of this unfolds in a fresh setting with new, enjoyable characters and intriguing world-building developments.

Now, let's shift our focus to the production aspects. The opening theme may not align with everyone's taste; it's passable but might leave those expecting a real hit somewhat disappointed. However, the overall music in the show is solid, featuring familiar tracks we've grown to love, along with some new additions. In particular, a fight scene (or an exchange of blows) in the second half of the season benefits greatly from an invigorating musical score, arguably becoming the scene's main highlight.

Discussing animation is a bit tricky. While there are a few scenes with the detailed, action-packed combat animation we've become accustomed to, it's not the primary focus of this season. The animation quality remains impressive and is easily on par with A-tier standards. However, given the relatively low number of actual fights this season, it feels as though more could have been done in that department, as if some corners were cut. This becomes evident in the scrimmage scene I mentioned earlier, which comes across as a sequence of partially animated still frames. Despite my overall enjoyment of the event, I can't help but scrutinize its animation. It's possible that the studio allocated more animators to the upcoming second part of the second season, which is likely to be more action-packed.

In conclusion, forming a definitive judgment is challenging. On one hand, this season of Mushoku Tensei delivers the essence of what we remember and love about the series: the characters, animation, sound, humor, and plot—all of which initially made the show great. On the other hand, the animation falls short of the exceptional standards we've come to expect, and the season's beginning feels somewhat prolonged and slow. I'm willing to give this season the benefit of the doubt and settle on a score of 9/10. I hope that my mixed feelings, stemming from both my love for the show and my disappointments, will fade once we get the second part of the second season. Nevertheless, it's unquestionably worth watching, and few shows can match its quality.

If you were given a second chance at life, would you take it? For the 34-year-old NEET we know as Rudeus Greyrat, the answer couldn't be more of a resounding yes. However, his new life in a brand new world, as all lives go, is far from perfect. After a triumphant journey around the world and back, he realises that everything about his hometown has changed. His home turned to dust; gleaming golden-brown wheat farms became swathes of barren wasteland; smiles on villagers' faces all wiped away; and adding onto that his companions Eris and Ruijerd leaving his side, Rudeus starts his journey to the ... north of Central Continent dejected as ever.

There is no denying that Mushoku Tensei II lacks the sense of grandeur its predecessors proudly exude, but to accuse it of being inferior would be unfair. The slow start is the perfect continuation for the sombre wake–up call that is season one's ending, it further punches down on Rudeus when he was at his lowest, reinforcing the message that there's no such thing as a life all smooth sailing. The arc immediately following is a timely reminder that the world doesn't revolve around Rudeus: his reunion with Zanoba and Cliff shows us the adventures he had embarked on are not isolated incidents and could carry unintended after-effects; while Sylphiette and Nanahoshi are symbols of that fact that lives lived outside Rudeus' view could be equally as eventful as his own. The stark narrative shift this season from exploration to character drama is no doubt less spectacular, but it puts much needed emphasis on the mundanity and gloom of reality instead of the wonders of an isekai. The result is a grounded tone that creates a sense of authenticity for Mushoku Tensei's world that little isekais could replicate.

Needless to say, the way in which Mushoku Tensei utilises its cast of characters to construct its plot and themes are terrific. However, what really differentiates it from the others is the attention to detail that Rifujin na Magonote pays when crafting its imposing and consistent worldview. The two-cour long exploration in the previous season had left many loose ends to pick up from, and this sequel chose the best ones to follow up on. Roxy's alma mater Ranoa Magic University, teased since the start of the series, is now the stage where the story plays out on. The Eris family drama that Rudeus had deliberately avoided makes an unexpected return through Slyphiette's companions. The unsolved mysteries of Turning Point 1 and 2, overshadowed by their horror and shock value, are radically recontextualised with the reappearance of Nanahoshi. Remembering to call back to a few instances of foreshadowing is light work, I'd argue it's even essential for fantasy epics like this, but it is their interwovenness combined with the seamlessness of how they are shifted from the background into the front stage that makes it so impressive.

And yet, even though the story is so beautiful, this sequel is one of the most disappointing in recent memory. Whether the drop in quality is due to the staff member changes or time constraints is a discussion that I'm not going to delve into. For all that matters, Mushoku Tensei II's production value is far inferior to its predecessor. Characters' faces are often disfigured; the failure to do proper scene changes renders many moments difficult to follow; sakuga is few and far between. These issues are especially prominent in the first arc, and I suspect it's because of the time spent at the attempts at creating the unique-to-each-episode 90 second opening animations.

It is, therefore, such a shame that the new team didn't seem to understand what makes those sequences great in the first place. In season one, they captured the splendour of the landscapes without compromising on the runtime, or delivered on concise exposition without slowing down the pacing to a snail's pace. This often means expanding on the original source material in order to make good use of the advantages of the change in medium (visual storytelling and the concurrence of the image and audio). In contrast, the animation that accompanies the openings of the Counter Arrow arc takes little liberty in diverging from the light novels, and makes no effort in carefully selecting which segments to include. Episode one's internal monologue paired with a flashback was Mushoku Tensei II's best take on the concept, but the opening could have been moved to the start for a view of the northern lands, then pair the ending song with Rudeus' monologue. Episode two's snow clearing scene could have easily been skipped and instead feature more details of the dungeon they were exploring that episode. Episode three's date with Sara put too much focus on the inconsequential actions of the two and missed the opportunity to show more about the city. Episode four's blatant foreshadowing also suffers from the same problem, too much runtime is spent featuring upcoming characters, entirely omitting Rudeus' journey to the University. If you feel that Mushoku Tensei this season feels different and sometimes even flavourless, this is why: their poor execution created a rippling impact on the quality of the show as a whole, not just the sequences themselves.

Given that the new team at Studio Bind couldn't capture the je ne sais quoi of the openings of its predecessor, the decision to cut such sequences was a good call. The show as a whole looked a lot better from the university arc onwards. Nevertheless, it hadn't returned to the high standards that people had come to expect. Still showing up from time to time are the weird portraits and awkward framing, and some dramatic moments fall flat due to the limited amount of sakuga (e.g., the confrontation with Badi). All that is to say, don't expect too much from Mushoku Tensei II's production. Even if (somehow) one comes out of season one limiting their expectations, they won't be impressed in the slightest: judging purely based on animation, season two is only marginally better than your average seasonal anime. It's fortunate that Rudeus' story in the northern countries requires much less spectacle to be entertaining, inadvertently making quality drop-off a little more palatable.

While we are on the topic of flaws, one cannot simply ignore Mushoku Tensei's narrative and thematic troubles. Detractors of this series have long criticised the show's pervasive perversion of the female cast, this time around Rudeus' condonation of slavery, and there's simply little excuse. This is a recurring problem with Mushoku Tensei: morally devious actions/events (as conceived by the modern person) are justified by in-universe explanations and rarely criticised textually or otherwise. Rudeus' abnormal sexual drive and creepy advances are conveniently accommodated by the deeply patriarchal world, and his apathy towards those living in appalling conditions is never questioned. Many say Mushoku Tensei is ultimately a story of a broken man's coming-of-age story, and thus moments like these are required for comparison and contrast. I find that argument disingenuous at best. While later entries could make this theme apparent with time, it doesn't follow that the show must handle such sensitive subjects in a tone deaf way.

In the end, I'm left conflicted. On one hand, Mushoku Tensei II is a disappointing sequel plagued with production issues, equipped with a questionable moral compass, and mired in fans' overexpectations. On the other hand, it is a comparatively decent entry in the over-saturated isekai genre, featuring a carefully crafted world with immense potential and countless engaging mysteries. Chances are, if you are invested in Mushoku Tensei, this season is probably a fine entry that's mildly disappointing; but if you only liked it for its fantastical explorations and startling plot twists, maybe it's time to look elsewhere.

Season 2 got off to a rocky start with the episode 0 special, having largely unimpressive production values and only serving to establish various supporting characters who didn't yet have enough of a stake in the story to be compelling on their own or are more reliant on dynamics with other characters. From what I've heard, the problem here is an adaptation dilemma. Once we get to episode 5, Rudy meets Fitz, but we already know this is Sylphy in disguise. In the light novel series, Sylphy's identity and the events of episode 0 are revealed later on. Since this is a visual adaptation with ... voice acting, Sylphy's identity would be obvious either way, and Rudy comes off as a dolt for not noticing; there are so many clues (on top of the direct admission) given to the audience that one might question whether or not his brain shrank from having a bad case of sad sack syndrome in the beginning. I think it would have been better to place episode 0 in the middle of this season, because while it's pretty obvious "Fitz" is Sylphy, it still might be smoother, with some of the anime-only audience having forgotten about the character, though the charade couldn't last long.

Once we get to the magic school arc, we're reacquainted with familiar faces and plenty of new characters, but the events fly by quickly to sometimes jarring effect, leaving many characters cast aside or their roles minimized. I'd assume a large amount of the core cast is meant to be introduced here, with Rudy and "Fitz," of course, getting most of the screen time, and being the one part of the story that feels well-developed. The conclusion of the budding friendship is a satisfying one, but it makes Rudy come across as an even bigger doofus—it's like those scenes in crappy teen films where the crush pines after another character, then finally takes his/her glasses off, and the crush is like, "Wow, I never noticed how cute you were until you took your glasses off," except way more blockheaded.

Both the initial adventuring arc and the school arc are slower in pacing than previous seasons, and there is less of a clear direction, as Rudy mills about on adventures, licks his wounds that developed due to the climax of the last season, works to overcome his depression, gets lost in the library at school, and... COPES WITH ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION? Wow, don't think I've seen this in anime before. There's the occasional "loser can't get it up" joke in a few anime, but it becomes a primary character motivation to cure his ED. Is he going to school to, ostensibly, solve the teleportation mystery, or is that just a front to puff the magic dragon?

MT is one of the few isekai series I've seen that feels especially "novelistic." Although many other isekai and fantasy series are based on lengthy source material, few of them feel as vast and lived-in as this world, with characters constantly revolving in and out and going on their own journeys and occasionally being crosscut to. The teleportation magic facilitates this grander feel of a jumbled world we're slowly piecing together. Of course, this season has a school setting for 2/3rds of the runtime, which, while less generic than your typical anime, does numb the fantastical aspects for a while. Quite a few complaints about this season appear myopic, as any long-running series will typically have segments that detach themselves from core plot developments or slow down to explore characters or other subplots. In that respect, I feel much of the criticism here in relation to past seasons is similar to the reception between S1 and S2 of Made in Abyss, with the latter one taking a bit of a respite from the main goal of S1 and fixating on a single environment.

I suppose it wouldn't be MT without a bit of controversy to inspire an order of white knights to chivalrously defend the honor of fair 2D maidens from the wretch who is Rudeus Greyrat—actually, a 30 or 40-something fat coomer with an anime pillow and a whole shelf of plastic grills, which feeds into the protestation. Much of the criticism amounting to being upset that the author or staff didn't "denounce" the character in some way for his misdeeds, or "the MC does things that are not nice and that's against my morals and I feel dirty when I try to self-insert."

Amusingly, there is a part where a running gag has Rudy groping a beast girl, and he is immediately slashed in the face for his effort—he is punished. The scene is meant to be humorous, but there are a number of instances where he is not punished, which are meant to elicit laughter as well, and the actions on display can be insensitive about touchy subjects. The dichotomy I've presented here tends to be the issue many have with the series, even alongside other more valid critiques. Before we even get to anything controversial, I was already in disagreement with Rudy for choosing to blame the beast girls over Zanoba. But he has his reasons, and if that is a flaw, it's a deliberate character flaw, not a writing flaw, which should be extended to the controversial moments as well. "Character did thing I disagree with and didn't get spanked" is not an example of "bad writing." It's an example of having a spanking fetish.

There's always been at least a touch of self-insertion in stories. The reader/viewer wants to emulate a hero, and imagines being in his shoes, no matter how stinky those shoes might be, and even if the self-inserter's feet are too petite to ever hope to fit. A good role model is a fine choice for an MC, but, every once in a while, it can be refreshing to follow a rogue or someone who falls short of the ideal in some way. There are stories that present villains, anti-heroes, or less than savory characters, but no matter how cruel their acts, they are almost always sterilized in a way that is deemed "appropriate" for the audience. Slaughtering a whole village might find an audience nodding along (Askeladd and Thorfinn are so COOOOOL—WHOA!!!), but forcefully grabbing a breast here and there without reprisal is 1... 2... 3... REEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!

Even if different sexual norms and slavery and the like may be acceptable or tolerated to varying degrees in this isekai world, it's expected that the MC cannot be immoral or amoral (unless it's "sanitized" or "punished"), indifferent, or follow a "when in Rome" approach. No, the character must be the quintessential avatar to self-insert for "I'm so moral and you should be too" power fantasies. Oops, Rudy didn't even end slavery. I doubt the ED was an easy swallow either. Honestly, I sometimes feel like anime invented self-insert syndrome: "Time to woo a moeblob with my protagonistic charisma... oh, crap, my magical scepter just went floppy. No wonder I'm depressed ;_;." It's like a passive observer's version of method acting, but Rudy keeps going off script! He went way off script with the hilarious kidnapping subplot, even bringing in his best bud (totally not his childhood girlfriend...) for advice, and everything is resolved in a neat, cavalier fashion. He's actually more worried about his panty shrine being revealed than the kidnapping scandal! For all the "this went too far" commentary, the solid execution of the writing and timing of the whole event is completely overlooked.

There's no reason to think MT was ever a story of "redemption," let alone redemption on the terms of the audience or any individual member of it. There might be shades of that and the character undeniably improves in many ways, but he was a pervert and of likely "low moral caliber" in his past life, and there was no reason to ever think that wouldn't carry over once he was isekaied. I mean, he has a shrine with a pair of panties he prays to, constituting a "perverted otaku (is this an oxymoron?) quasi-religion." Old habits die hard, often not at all. CAN a total pervert change his ways and become "redeemed"? Sure, I guess, but that's not this story—well, it's probably not, but I'll leave that to the LN readers to decide, as we still have a ways to go.

I see MT as presenting more of a contrast between the activity of the isekai world and the passivity of the modern world, ironically enough, explored through the escapist fantasy that is the norm of the period. Yeah, Rudy was a fat loser in his past life. Meanwhile, plenty of other people either had a more advantageous position in some way, a better temperament, or were able to overcome their problems by comparison, leading them to be less of a fat loser. But it's not like much of the world is structured in such a way as to incentive not being a fat loser. Rudy is portrayed as intelligent and capable, which suggests his untapped potential even in the fat loser dimension. Other than for the ultra-wealthy, the isekai world here is not one that allows for much escapism and running away. True, Rudy is born to a decent family, had good connections as a result, and the isekai advantage... but I reckon he would have done fine with a more paltry isekai life—it just wouldn't be one nearly as enjoyable to watch.

[So, a quick disclaimer, I like this show, so if you think that because of that my opinion is invalid, kindly piss off]

If you don’t care about the controversy and are only interested in my simple opinion on the second season alone, you can skip all the way down to THE SIMPLE REVIEW. However, if you do that and still feel like attacking me for some reason, please read the following text first, maybe that already answers your question(s).

It is rare that you find a show to be the center of as much debate as Mushoku Tensei. No, that wouldn’t be right, you can hardly ... call monkeys flinging sh*t at each other a debate. There are negative aspects that I think are well worth being criticized. But for some reason everyone got so stuck on an overall pretty simple to discuss “flaw”, that they either failed to accept that this show is indeed able to tell a compelling story or were so taken over by that single thing that they can’t even begin to see anything but that.
Look, I am going to make this as simple as possible. If you don’t like this show, that is completely normal, it practically tries to make you hate its main character in an openly disgusting way, and if that puts you off, that is okay. It isn’t just me saying this, I have never even once heard a fan of this show claim that you have to like it or anything. What really gets me, though, are those people that think, that because I watch this show, I am a pedophile or whatever. There are so many things that you can watch this show for, but not once have I actually met someone that deliberately decided to watch this show entirely because the Protagonist is a groomer.

With that out of the way, we can firstly get to the necessary stuff before finally getting to the interesting bit of reviewing season two in the context of the overall narrative.
Do you notice how insane that last sentence sounds? You made me do that, so please, just chill the f*ck out when someone just doesn’t like the same things you do.

The necessary stuff: This should be obvious, if you don’t get this, maybe start reading the subtitles. Rudeus is meant to be as disgusting as he is. I have argued with so many people that just didn’t get that this is intentional. And I am not saying that the “fan service” is intentional, that would be the case with pretty much every Ecchi-Anime, what I am saying is, that it is intentional, that the fan service is uncomfortable and that Rudeus is a weirdo. He is not meant to be a good guy. These are not the depraved fantasies of the author. If you think that something that Rudeus does is detestable, then you are right, because it is not meant to be the right thing. Are you going to call out Attack on Titan for “advocating” genocide? If your answer to that question is yes, please seek help, but if your answer is as expected a clear no, then I have to ask you what your problem with Mushoku is? Well….

The Problem with Mushoku: You remember how I said that there are negative aspects that are well worth being criticized? Well, here we go: Mushoku Tensei has fan service… Yes. That is what we are attacking the show for. Fan service isn’t a new thing, the issue is that the characters that are being sexualized are children and yes, that very much is an issue. I don’t really care, because it is filtered through the perspective of Rudeus and really not as bad as what people make it sound like (Have you seen like any trigger show). BUT, and I must say, that’s a pretty big BUT, you can be offended by that, and if you are, I am not going to judge you for walking away from the show. Hell, I would even defend you, if that was your opinion. It only becomes a problem, when you start blaming the show for not being something you like. This is especially an issue for Mushoku, because it already had it hard to even be taken seriously, that is how much the recent history of Isekai has squandered its appeal. I know that I am repeating myself, but I am going to say it once again, if this show isn’t your thing, nobody is going to attack you for that. The problem here is that habit of needing to justify your opinion, no matter how miniscule it is. I am not going to call you a racist if you don’t wanna date a person with a different skin color, this only becomes an issue if you start saying that this is an objective problem, because, listen up buddy, it is not. There are objective flaws that can turn you away from a story, but this is not one of them. You wouldn’t call out Breaking Bad because you find it morally wrong that they are dealing with meth, right?

Okay, I think we are finally done with this. If you felt like all of that was unnecessary, you clearly have never had an argument with a certain clown whose name I am not going to mention, simply because they don’t deserve it. Either way, after all that, I can finally give my simple thoughts on Mushoku Tensei's second season, without having all that on the back of my mind.

THE SIMPLE REVIEW:

New setting, new characters, new everything. Is it all as good as season one? Probably not, but it is really quite impressive how diverse this show is in its setting and tone.

Speaking of tone, we have a small step-down in atmosphere and world building. Season two quits the opening format of the first season after three episodes and replaces it with a simple anime opening. To make this clear, the opening is a banger and is amazing when compared to other anime, but then again, this show was exceptional from the start. In short, I miss the old openings, but the new one slaps. I also feel like there is a small step-down when it comes to the overall production value of the show, but it is more so a step-down from season 1 part 2. If season 2 part 2 is going to be awesome again, is something we will have to see, but this is still on the incredibly high production standard of season 1s first part.

Now, the story, this is going to be a bit difficult. The story is incredibly character rich, but it feels a bit directionless after the first three episodes. A lot of the stuff that seems like filler might just be set up for later seasons, either way, I feel like they could have done a better job moving the overall narrative. As it stands right now, season 2 feels incredibly disconnected from what came before it. There are a lot of plot threads that got picked up again and some were even wrapped together, but the mayor stuff has been entirely sidelined. Primarily, the Dead-End party has been entirely removed from the cast for this season and his been replaced with a similarly colorful but, overall, just shallow cast of students. Look, I like most of these guys, well, I would probably hate them if I ever met them, but they are a lot of fun to watch, a bit like Power really. And with that, we get to the big problem. If you don’t like these characters and especially are not interested in the redemption of Rudeus, this season is not only going to not change that, but it will probably bore you to death. This is why I must emphasize that I like this show, a lot actually, but it only really works if you have been immersed throughout the first season to such a degree that you want to see this tale be told.

A great season, but not one that stands out, that is what I am going to call it. I love it, but I am just some guy on the internet, so if you don’t, I’m okay with that. I have heard some crazy things about part 2 and I hope that I can be back in half a year to take every bit of criticism back, because this show truly deservers all the praise it is getting, even if it is fundamentally flawed.

Edit [15.04.2024]: Hi diddly do fellow neighbor, it appears that this is far and beyond, like completely unlike everything else, totally, without doubt, absolutely the most average thing I ever wrote. I just wanted to apologize for the whole debate part, I was having a lot of discussions with people about this stuff at the time, and while I still have the same position, I can't ignore how poor I argued my position, a few of the things further up are just straight up bullshit, and I am sorry, for underselling an industry-wide problem that we should not just silently accept.

Season 2 of the distinguished isekai series builds upon the legacy of the first installment, commencing with the introduction of two new regions and an exploration of their political and economic landscape. The narrative follows the protagonist's recovery from the depression experienced in the previous season's finale, leading him to a prestigious mage university where his skills are expected to be further enhanced. Interwoven are thrilling quests with various adventurer guilds and enriching interactions that explore camaraderie and romance.

The second season maintains the strength of its predecessor, particularly in the aspect of world-building. The detailed and logically cohesive universe sets it apart from many others ... in the anime genre. From the geopolitical intricacies of the regions to the nuanced responses and behavior of the characters, everything in Mushoku Tensei has been meticulously crafted. This attention to detail fosters a profound connection with the characters, allowing for deep empathy and understanding.It is as if I'm watching animation of an extremely well written fantasy novel.

Mushoku Tensei sets itself apart from conventional anime by eschewing the stereotypical "cool" main character who invariably does the right thing. Instead, the protagonist of Mushoku Tensei exhibits traits more akin to a realistic individual, complete with personal flaws and complexity. The narrative further diverges from traditional patterns by refraining from introducing generic, overpowered villains only to be defeated by sudden, unexplained power-ups. Instead, it focuses on adventures and quests within an intricately crafted fantasy world, devoid of clear and obvious villains or objectives.

This approach has resulted in a mixed reception; some viewers, expecting a more typical isekai experience, find themselves disappointed and unable to recognize the innovation and distinctiveness that Mushoku Tensei brings to the genre. Their expectations are challenged by a story that seeks to redefine conventional norms, potentially leading to an underappreciation of its true greatness and uniqueness.

As time passed, I felt empty as one of my favorite shows of 2021 ended its run with a bittersweet ending, yet I couldn't help but want more of Mushoku Tensei. Well, everything changed when the Bind nation announced an actual trailer for the 2nd season of Mushoku Tensei, coming with 2 cours. As the 1st cour has come to an end, I have nothing to say other than the feeling of satisfaction and happiness not a lot of shows can manage to evoke that same feeling. This 2nd season has come again to refill the dark void in my soul once again.

Unlike the 1st ... season which was filled with twists and surprises where Rudeus is thrown into a situation, let it be disturbing, challenging, annoying, or even sometimes amusing to watch, the 2nd season starts off subtly (or easy to say, pretty slow), not with Rudy magically knowing what to do or has a lofty goal to pursue after the end of Season 1. The character is lost, left with no purpose, and easily described, as just a dead man walking, waiting for change. This not only is in effect for the plot, but the comedy, drama, and ecchi have been a lot less obvious and more subtle. There are still moments of ecchi that happen here and there throughout this course. Still, even then, it's usually either censored or less visibly shown unlike the previous season's ridiculous amount of fanservice that were present in here. I'm not promising the anime has less fanservice, if you were already grossed out by it in the 1st season, you won't like this one either.

If there was a demerit this season had, the production value has seen itself a downgrade from its previous season. This means characters are less expressive and don't move much with the exception of its action sequences, which only last long enough to fuel dramatic tension. There are still moments of incredible animation, but not enough to make any action memorable that happened in this season. However, even with the downgrade, we still have characters that receive development and get meaningful moments without being forced or convoluted.

The divided attention between support and pure hatred for Rudeus continues to this day, thanks to the inner dark voice lying deep inside his head. I mean, it's hard to empathize with a man in a growing body to have such lewd thoughts, but the story, at the end of the day, has always been Rudeus' redemption for becoming a better person. We've seen countless proofs of how he's a disgusting human with excruciatingly low self-esteem and confidence, but even then, he still has the conscience to know he needs to be better, even if he's chasing the most stupid goals. And he still acts on it to improve himself, even if he needs others to back him up.

One thing that has remained consistent throughout the series has been the characters, even for characters you never see in this season, you still get mentions or see some implication of other characters (or love interests), it showcases the impacts these characters have on the narrative. The dialogues along with Rudeus' darker monologues to back with his choice of words have always been my favorite part of Mushoku Tensei. I realize how its well-written characters make a story good along with incredible voice acting from the cast. It may not have the brilliant visuals or fantastic fighting sequences to be gazed upon, but it still proves to be a good sequel for my favorite anime.

Jobless Reincarnation has so much potential to be a great show. Unfortunately, the writers don't seem to realize that you can have a great story with AMAZING characters without sex being involved as much as it is. I'll try to keep this as spoiler-free as possible for those considering giving it a watch, and I'll try my best to come up with pros to go along with the big cons. *Apologies for the long review, there's just a lot to compliment and complain/warn about. ;-;*

__PROS:__
---STORY/WORLDBUILDING - The concept is awesome. It's the first Isekai I've watched where the MC retains consciousness after complete rebirth and ... is raised from infancy. Even if it's not the first of its kind, the idea itself is still really interesting to me. The worldbuilding is stellar and the fantasy is so well implemented; the world around Rudeus feels alive and constantly changing, and the relationships between characters are often realistically fickle and/or dynamic, even if the characters themselves can sometimes be one-dimensional and incredibly dense. Exotic peoples manage their own governments in diverse lands—it's everything you want for a good world to go along with a good story. The magic and fighting especially are so satisfying to watch and learn about, and the animations for them are beautiful.
---CHARACTERS - Every one of the characters (who are at least mildly important to the story) have their own convictions and reasons to do things, even if the reasons are dull or they themselves are entirely uninteresting. Not every character needs to be completely fleshed out with his own side-story worthy of its a special episode, people! Additionally, each of those at least mildly important characters has such contrasting and unique designs to one another and the girls are beautiful and cute and adorable and the guys are rugged and masculine (for the most part). Despite being a bit predictable, the characters are constantly changing and learning and adapting. Just because they make a choice you don't like doesn't mean it's bad storytelling or the show is bad. They're realistic *because* they're sometimes irrational and do dumb things. Especially Rudeus. And another thing: others already mentioned this, but maybe Rudeus isn't meant to be liked.
---ART/MUSIC/INTRO+OUTRO - First, I want to fanboy over the art style. I fucking love it. Call me a cliche, but I like cute girls in anime. Jobless Reincarnation doesn't disappoint and does an excellent job crafting stunning characters who are pleasant to look at. The backdrops are gorgeous and the cities are beautifully drawn and designed. The trees, the water, the sky; it is so perfect. The music is fine and fits perfectly with their respective scenes. And the intros. THE. INTROS. I LOVE that you can't just skip them. They took the time to make the intro cutscenes worth something instead of being something you can just skip without any loss of context. Seriously, well done.

__CONS:__
---STORY - The first gripe is obviously the sexual deviation. In nearly every episode, the writers have to rub into the viewers' faces that in some form or another, every character either has a sexually predatory nature to them or is a victim to said sexual predators (regrettably including but not limited to underaged individuals) down the line eventually. I'm sure we all came to this realization fairly quickly in Jobless Reincarnation's story as our MC is an unwavering, shameless pervert straight from episode one. PLEASE don't touch Aisha, Norn, Eris, or Sylphie. Leave the characters who have any innocence left alone. Secondly, another big gripe is, well, episode 3 of this season. If you read other reviews, you know why it's bad, and if you haven't, you'll understand if you watch the show. It's such a waste of time and so off-putting that I nearly dropped the show. I'm completely fine with what they did with Eris at the end of the last season, but fuck.
---CHARACTERS - I know I complimented how the characters realistically sometimes make mistakes, but the way it's done is sometimes a detriment to the story and the relatability of the characters. Rudeus is relatable because he lived an awful life and suffers depression, but then you're snapped out of it because the choices he makes are so perplexing sometimes. Now I'm entirely fine with the whole E.D. thing, it's understandable, he's going through heartbreak, but FUCK. A whole fucking episode focused solely on how he's depressed? The writers really fucking fumbled the small Counter Arrow story, and especially fumbled Rudeus and Sara. Not in a shipping way, not at all. It was just so hard to watch, man. Moreover, Elinalise. She's fucking obnoxious. Stop taking every opportunity to show how much of a slut she is. Also, does the main writer have a cuckolding fetish or something? Because man, episode 4 reeked of it.
---THE OBVIOUS - Yes, season 1 was bad with the young characters and the pedophilia subtext and sexual assault, and those disgusting bath scenes in the first few episodes. I can't guarantee it's any better due to how often sex as a subject is brought up, but fortunately, it gets less intense with the wholesome characters and focuses more on the adult side of things, even if Rudeus himself is currently in a young man's body. I really hope it stays that way because season one, as good as it is, was really hard to get through at times.

__TL;DR__
The world is beautifully designed and the story itself is so... fascinating. I don't want to say it's great, but Jobless Reincarnation grabbed my attention in a way I didn't expect. Seeing the reviews on the first season made me wary but I'm glad I gave it a chance, even if it had its really lows.
I can't specifically recommend this show right now because of how hard to watch the content that's currently released is. All I can do is cross my fingers and hope it'll get better. Thanks for reading if you got all the way through!
