Anime Relations: Lupin III: Part III
Story

A girl walks into a bar that Lupin is tending. They begin talking about a bullet hole named "Bartender's Rest," and she asks the name of the cocktail he's making. When he calls it "revenge," it triggers something in her. She remembers how her father was killed. Lupin names him Jack Metousa, the head of the LA bank branch. He says he'll help her seek revenge if she returns to the bar at three the following afternoon. Lupin contacts Fujiko to tell her his end is all good, and she informs him Zenigata is heavily guarding the armored tank. Everything's still good. The girl, Sara, arrives the next day, and the two await Jack. When he arrives, Sara goes to shoot him, but right as she does, Lupin grabs her wrist and has her aim right through Bartender's Rest, shooting the armored truck's tire right outside. Jigen and Goemon, under the ground, cut a hole in the trunk and have all the gold inside fall into their pit. Jack panics, realizing who Sara is and what happened to all his gold. Lupin and Sara run after Jigen and Goemon and escape through the sewer. But Jack follows them and plans to shoot them, and Fujiko also betrays them. They take off with the gold, but after Jack says he won't give any of the gold to her, she betrays him instead and records him admitting to having killed Sara's father for his gold and plans to kill her as well so she can't inherit it. Fujiko sends the tape to Zenigata, and he promptly arrests Jack. Lupin gives Sara a key to her father's safe and promises to give her half of the gold they stole. She laughs, and as she silently returns to the bar, she leaves the key there.

Wow, this episode was so awesome. I checked to see who directed this, Takashi Sokabe, and he's directed a few other episodes in Part 3 so far. I checked because the direction of this episode is nothing like the rest of Part 3 we've seen so far, and it's just sooo cool. The almost noir-esque vibe, heightened sense of drama, and interesting camera angles made this episode really stand out. It's still not my favorite because, at the story's core, the plot itself is very standard; it's just the way it presents itself makes it so much more interesting and gripping. That being said, the actual revenge was very satisfying and showed that really cool side of Lupin. My one point of confusion is why they kept referring to this as a play and talking about Hamlet. Hamlet is one of the only two Shakespeare plays I've read, and I was kind of confused. Yes, Hamlet is about seeking revenge for your father's death. But that's about as far as the similarities lie, so then why is this any more significant than the many, many other revenge plots we've seen throughout the franchise?

Characters

If Lupin ever retired from being a thief, bartending is totally his forte. His vibe was so suave and chill, the man, he was cool. This time I didn't mind him playing more of the hero with just the cool way he conducted himself. I'm glad he did a more accurate form, taking advantage of someone to get what he wants and letting Sara seek her revenge. Just so cool.

Goemon, my precious boy... oh, you poor thing. When Jigen handed him the burger I kept thinking "he's not going to complain?" Then he asks about having a riceball instead. Then, Jigen says that Hamlet actors eat burgers or something. Then Goemon looks at the meat on his burger, all confused, and just goes, "Ham?" Oh my god, never change Goemon. Y'know I can't blame him, I wouldn't be reading Shakespeare either if English teachers didn't put his work on the same level as the Bible. This is one of the most realistic Goemon moments ever. This scene must remain in my heart forever.

Art/Animation

This shot is sooo cool. I love the way it's framed, and the background is very beautifully painted. The way the light comes from the door and how it reflects off the wet cobblestone road. ARGH IT LOOKS SO COOL!! The vibes in this episode, I can't get enough.
