Watching him tackle each climb with the same determination one applies to surviving a particularly awkward social gathering is both inspiring and eerily relatable.

Each chapter of "Scaling the Heights of Self-Discovery" is a testament to the notion that sometimes, to truly find yourself, you need to get lost on a mountainside or two. Mori's approach to life's challenges, choosing to face them head-on (or, more accurately, climb them head-on), provides a compelling blueprint for navigating the ups and downs of our own personal landscapes.

So yes, "Scaling the Heights of Self-Discovery: The Mori Memoirs" is more than just my favorite manga; it's a mirror reflecting my own aspirations and the occasional existential crisis, packaged within the gripping narrative of a climber's quest for meaning and belonging. Mori, in his silent determination and introspective solitude, teaches us that sometimes the most significant journeys are those that take us not just across the world but deep within ourselves. And if that involves scaling a few daunting peaks along the way, then so be it. After all, isn't life itself the ultimate climb?

Solitude is the only word that crosses my mind whenever i remember the panels of the landscape, be it at night with the only shining light coming from the moon, or the clear sky from the peak of the mountain. Honestly, Shiniichi is probably the most talented mangaka drawing landscapes.
Another really inetresting thing about the manga is the huge chunk of panels with Mori that have absolutely no dialogue or inner-dialogue, just him. And the feelings and things he wants to convey are passed to us by facial expressions or w he acts in these panels.
Mori is a introvert ... who bottles and sucks things up, and honestly, that reminded me of how i was in high school, and how it was probably better to be alone so i wouldn't hurt myself and others. Thankfully, i found something that cleared my head off of things and made me forget about my surrounding. In my case, it was martial arts, for Buntarou, climbing.
And being obssessed with something, so much so that you just forget everything, even those most dear to you, is at the same time the signs of someone who's insane but i can't help but admire the focus and determination that obssessed people put in their obssession, it has a melancholic beauty to it.
Even if i say i did marial arts, it wans't dnough to take the bug of being alone from my shoulder, hopeffully, i found people who i could call friends, real friends. But Mori didn't have that, he was always alone on the summit of a mountain, but he was free, and most importantly, those were the only moments he knew he was alive.
Well, this review has been very half-assed because i didn't ralize how hard it was to write a spoiler-free coherent review, but this is what i got, so, please read Kokou no Hito, i implore you.

Don't get fooled by the sports tag and think this is your typical "aim for the nationals" type of shounen sports manga. There are no team elements, no friendship that leads to victory and all that cliche stuff. This is a psychological manga revolving around a solitary guy that finds passion in climbing, and mesmerizing yet intimidating mountains that pull you towards them. The artwork is great, the mountains that the mangaka drew are absolutely stunning, character designs are incredible and the panels are amazing at explaining the character's emotions and psychology without ever needing to use words. This manga changed my perspective and ... even created a lifelong goal for me, which is visiting a mountain that is very important to the story of the manga. Best manga I've read, ever.

the author masterpiece to say the least, it is considered peak fiction in my book following a memoir of an actual climber life. the story took place in the typical sport shounen but quickly differentiate from all it's comeptition where it took the consequences of all their action and a full on after story from the usual highschool plot.

It shows the flaw of each character and how the flaw grew if each character refuse to grow as a human, it shows the raw regret, pain, suffering, and joy of each the MC life decision it choose. It also shows the financial reality on picking ... your passion, but it shows hope on what you can do to pursue your passion while maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

overall, a read worth taking a whole day off.

In life, do you think you have a purpose?
that's our mc's dilemma in the first chapter of the story he never was truly engrossed, engaged whatever you may call it. Till he was shown this new environment called rock climbing.
He fell right inside like a rabbit caught in a sinkhole and well to not spoil anything I'll stop.
FMC well that comes well after in the story after he's made his mark in the world after he's gathered fame he didn't need.
"Friends" He never needed that, Mori buntarou otherwise known as Buntarou Kato, a real life person who this story ... is based on. Is what we will call a solo adventurer one that doesn't need anything other than himself.
And we're shown and told countless times to the point I thought it was satirical.

I started reading this story cause I was curious.
And I ended it feeling like I accomplished something in life although it was just me finishing another manga.
But it wasn't just any "other story".
It was a masterpiece.

I want to start by saying that words are not enough. I say this wholeheartedly. I've been reading manga and watching anime since I was a kid. But I was 20 when I discovered Sakamato. The guy doesn't write manga, he certainly doesn't write manga. He draws works of art and does it professionally. I wish I had read this manga before Innocent, then I would understand how he had improved so much in drawing. If you have noticed, the drawings at the beginning of the manga and the ones that follow are in an extraordinary difference. We can see this very easily. It is ... an exquisite and number 10 manga with its story and illustrations. How bad can a manga by Sakamato be anyway? The man creates a work of art. Man you're perfect and I adore you. Maybe my drawings aren't good right now, but one day I want to write a manga of extraordinary reality as you do, and I just want to leave the world. You are crazy. I admire your drawings. I look forward to meeting you one day. That's all my comments.

Kokou no Hito is not an easy work to read, and even more difficult to analyze. At various times the manga is loaded with visual symbolism and more metaphorical moments in the narrative.

Frankly, this work is excellent and deserves to be called a masterpiece. There are several super creative moments on the part of the author to pass sensations, my favorites being the descent in an orchestra rhythm and the psychological struggle of the MC with himself.

The story is very good, and in my perception it's about the MC having his reflection journey with the world, because while climbing is freedom for him, it's also ... an escape from society because he can't fit into it. The character is extremely introverted and has difficulty expressing himself, causing him to have many conflicts with the people around him, so he ends up seeing mountaineering as a place just for him, but he gradually discovers that he needs to bond with people .

The only negative points for me are: the narrative style that has several temporal jumps during the story which leaves the reader confused many times. Added to this, the characters do not receive good attention from the author, making them exist only to have a conflict with the MC, this makes them lack more depth, but they are not shallow characters, they just lack depth and your life matters.

Finally, the art deserves special praise. It's exceptional how the settings, character expressions and even visual symbolism are done. One of the best artwork I've ever seen in a manga.

This manga is peak. The art style is perfect and really really good. The characters, the plot, the character development, just everything, is perfect. This manga is definitely worth to read and you all won't regret it. It is fantastic. Once you started to read this manga, you'll get addicted to it. It just hits so hard emotionally. It'll motivate one to become a better person in life and in anything else.

This is not an ordinary sports manga, it's about a dark story of a teenager growing up in this society and wanted to be alone, and it says a lot about the society nowadays. ... The character development of every character is unbelieveable. The growth and maturation of Mori Buntarou is insanely well done. It's a masterpiece. This manga is definitely a must read if you're on your lowest point of life. I cried when I read this manga, I'm speechless of everything the author did in this manga. The moral that the author tried to deliver is really heart touching. The art style of Sakamoto, the author of Kokou No Hito is worth to mention. The artstyle of Sakamoto is stunning. I can't describe how perfect is the artstyle, although this manga is finished in 2010s but its art is much better than most of the mangas nowadays in my honest opinion. It's realistic, it's almost like it's real, especially the mountains, it's like a 4K picture. The only suitable word that can describe this manga is "peak".

Although you might find the time skip of the story is confusing, but this is why this manga is good. It's like a puzzle that you have to solve, you have to connect all the time skips together. I just can't express how much I love and appreciate this manga. It just has a weird feeling that motivates the readers. Again, this manga is peak. And I'm sure you'll agree too after giving Kokou No Hito a try. It's one of the best manga in this world. Everything just blends in so perfectly like the art, the story, the characters, everything. Just perfect. Well done Sakamoto.

When I opened the door to see Kokou no Hito, I wasn't expecting much but as I was reading, my expectations were blown out of the water and into the dark sky making it shine like a lone star and a lone star it is, it is one of the only manga about rock climbing in general, Kokou no Hito is a manga where our main character learns about climbing and becomes an absolute addict, trust me guys, climbing is like crack since you got chalk anyway which is also white powder!

So the art is very great well, I love it, the feelings you feel ... when he climbs a mountain makes you want to climb it yourself, also it does talk a lot about free solo but please dont free solo, you dont have plot armor.

tl;dr: A manga that feels like it's being pulled around randomly and has a lot of rough edges but comes together pretty well despite that. 

Something that makes this manga interesting is that it feels like the author changes his mind about what he wants to do quite often, which at times completely changes the course of the story. This is most notable in that it started on a path, seeming like it was going to become a pretty standard high school sports manga, before all of that completely fell apart suddenly. After that there's a time skip and it seemed like it was going to become a more extreme sports ... manga, or something like a story about survival, but that too abruptly crashed and burned. After that it seems to enter its final path, wherein it becomes a lot more philosophical, taking a lot of what happened in the previous arcs and taking them to their conclusion in unexpected ways. Now while a lot of small things make it seem like this wasn't planned, ultimately it does come together surprisingly well. Furthermore, the parts where everything is falling apart are probably the best and most intense in the manga because they're so different from the way such stories usually go. Because the plot has major shifts, the only character to really remain a focus throughout the manga is Buntarou. He has quite an interesting character arc, where rather than being something like steady growth, rather it's more like two steps forward one step back, in terms of where he starts and where he ends up. It also has a take on being alone that's quite a bit different from most manga, wherein it doesn't seem to try to push the message that being a loner is bad at all for the most part. This messaging about being alone and person's place in society and meaning for existence do get considerably muddled in the final arc though. Other than Buntarou and some of the characters introduced in the last arc like Hana, it seemed to try to make all the characters eventually seem like awful people, which makes sense when pushing why Buntarou needed to be alone, but as someone that's pretty character oriented I still wasn't much of a fan of this approach. In terms of the action, it could be quite exhilarating at times, but at others it felt like it was dragging on. Part of this was that while the imagery used to convey broader, philosophical elements related to climbing was really good and the did add quite a bit most of the time, as it approached the end they began being used far too much, and actually got somewhat tiring. Furthermore, the ending felt incredibly rushed, wherein how it ends isn't completely bad, but how the last climb ends is rushed through far too quickly, and the epilogue to it feels like it doesn't have enough substance to it considering all the buildup. The art was decent enough, with some of the stranger shots being especially good. 

now that was amazing. At first i was bit skeptical about reading this as i was not interested in mountains and simply wasn't convinced something that revolves mainly around mountains would be to my liking but holy shit did i love it. it is quite long but there are a lot of chapters that contain mostly just panels with no dialogue. And it starts of a bit slow but after just a few chapters you get absorbed into the story as you want to find out whether Mori's goal is the right path to choose or if he's just running away from himself.

Mori is an ... amazing character and i think he's quite an extreme case when it comes to translating things into real life but if this manga piqued your interest i think you might find a bit of yourself in him. It really is amazing how much he grew and I was very proud of him at the end. Though the ending might be a bit confusing, it left me very satisfied.

The art style was absolutely amazing and u might as well read it just for that, there are a lot of annoying bitch ass characters but please do not drop this, and like someone else said, the art style is very detailed and u might get confused as to what u should focus on.

Anyway, kokou no hito is a must-read.

"What's the point of climbing a mountain?"

Born with a supernatural gift for climbing, brooding loner Mori Buntarou, ascends the highest mountains in order to escape from the world below. For most of this manga there's nothing waiting for him below. He's a misanthropic misfit who has been hurt by anyone he's ever opened up to, so he prefers to do everything solo.

Moody loners protagonists are a staple of manga. Usually they are presented as mysterious badasses who make women swoon without having to utter anything more than a grunt.

Like Client Eastwood, they are cool.

I'm sure many young men have tried to ... emulate that sort of suave detachment in real life and (hopefully) learned that it makes them seem like awkward weirdos. Therefore, I usually find characters matching that description to be bland and unrealistic, but in this manga Muto's characterization subverted my expectations. He's weird, and turns people off. Regardless of how many mountains he conquers, he's a social outcast who can hardly do more than stand speechlessly when faced with another human being.

Instead of worrying about that, Muto obsesses over a single Herculean task "Climb the highest mountain", which he writes down and pins onto the wall of his austere single room apartment. There he lives like a monk, carrying a heavy ruck-sack full of water bottles to and from work because he doesn't have running water at home (or any other essentials). He cuts back on food for days, and bivouacs in the dead of winter because he has one thing in mind: to conquer the untrodden East-face of K2.

A major theme of isolation and the risk of opening oneself up to others persists throughout this series. I won't spoil it for you, but I'll mention that as soon as the once suicidal Muto finds acceptance and love, he finally finds what he was looking for on those mountains.

If you're looking for a manga that is both thrilling and emotionally gripping, then "Kokou no Hito" is an excellent choice. This manga series is a masterpiece that follows the life of Mori Buntarou, a high school student who is passionate about mountain climbing.

So I’ve finished Kokou no Hito (The Climber) a few days ago and I would like to give my review on it. This is a spoiler free review.

Story: The Story was compelling, gripping and captivating. It is about a student called Mori Buntarou who has a gift for rock climbing in order to be alone and escape from the world below, when he climbs he finds enjoyment and feels alive as he grows attached to these mountains and less from the outside world . Mori is a very different protagonist from most of the other protagonists who are talkative, reckless, witty, have friends etc. Mori ... is nothing like that and I appreciate the change Sakamoto went. The story is not just climbing mountains its so much more, focusing on the daily life of Mori and how he changes as a person to what he was from chapter 1 to what he was in the last chapters, similar to Ping Pong. Overall this story offers some comedy, drama and romance which is a nice touch. There is also a ton of imagery and symbolism used and covers many mature themes such as isolation, tragedy, growth, hardships etc. One criticism I have is the structure of the story, especially during the middle portion where it tends to jump forwards or backwards in time quite frequently as it can confusing at times but by the end it all ties up together.

Characters: This manga is heavily focused on the psychological development of the protagonist and the author did a great job of developing and changing him as a character. The side characters don’t receive as big of a development as Mori but they undergo a little bit which is fine as the manga is all about Mori Buntarou. One criticism I have with the characters is the author could’ve used more care with a couple of the side characters but the side characters are mostly all interesting, look very realistic, have their own distinct personalities and contribute to the story well.

Art: The artwork in this manga is amazing. From the double page spreads to the amazing background pages, hard to believe this was a weekly manga at one point as the art is very very detailed. In addition, it also stays consistently good so it suffers no inconsistencies or drawbacks. Kokou no Hito in my opinion has some of the most realistic looking people in manga which are on par with other mangas such as Vagabond. Volume covers look gorgeous as well. Not the best artwork in manga but its up there.

So Overall, if you want a dark, character driven and gripping story I would recommend this manga to you. I've immersed myself with the story, the main characters, the side characters, the artwork and it was a great read. Its a story filled with drama, isolation and death and it effectively portrays the hardships of life. Its not a Masterpiece by any means as it has a few notable flaws but its something you should definitely check out as it is an enjoyable read.

Outstanding manga.

Story itself is developed really well. It really drag each other elements like the manga itself themed mountain climber too.

The character... Yes, visible confusion, and self fighting. Within the mountain climbing, in the middle of it, you too not only relying on your mountain climbing ability but also having a conflict within yourself. I only want to say, it's really like finding yourself journey, by facing your inner conflict and then you can be a better version of yourself. The manga can give this feeling really well.

The art? Superb, so realist. The manga artist really done it job well, even though I don't know ... what is a mountain climbing equipment or mountain peak view, but the art in this manga makes the reader think "My, this is how it feel, to suffocate, to be hard at breathing at high altitude, etc etc".

Yes, if you like realist manga with a story close to realist (It used a real life reference, so I think it's close) and "I think I can go with one more chapter, oh wait, it's already morning" manga. This could be one for you.

Characters:
The story revolves almost entirely around Mori with almost all other characters presenting themselves as challenges that he must struggle with and over come. Though Mori does meet some good people throughout his life with some genuinely touching scenes that really express how strong and weak Mori is.

Art:
The art in this series is quite simply, astonishingly good. The way the author draws everything from Mori’s exhausted and frostbitten face to the beautiful sight of the K2 mountain the art would only be comparable to series such as Berserk and Vagabond. The art also works very effectively with the symbolism in the series, quite effectively distinguishing ... reality from symbolic scenes or gestures in most cases.

Conclusion:
Kokou no Hito (The Climber) is by no means an easy read but it is an important one. The art is stunning and the story is gripping and although not flawless I would highly recommend this series.

In school, we are taught when examining literature critically to look for the meaning that is there beyond the words. While this can lead to some unhealthy fixations, it's a good rule of thumb and I think borne from something not totally artificial or scholarly. Humans like when something is said in a a veiled way, the long history of poetry and legend can attest to that. I also think that this veil is not something inconsequential either; the way an idea or theme is presented can open doors to nuance that would be otherwise impossible. In the world of manga, we also have the ... added medium of the image to enhance this process, so you would think this would open doors to an infinite amount of permutations of meaning, story, and character types.

As any of us who are remotely familiar with the medium, this is not the case. Although it's always important to consider Sturgeon's Law ("ninety percent of everything is crap"), I don't think it's stretching it to say that most mangas follow a predictable route when it comes to what the message is and how it's conveyed. Keeping this in mind, when approaching a manga that follows a pathologically asocial young man who wants to climb mountains alone, it's hard not to piece together what you think the Disney-tale moral is going to be. Honestly, even if that's how Kokou No Hito turned out, it would still be very good. The art is as breathtaking as the vistas it represents, characters are varied, and the pacing is tight. And even if a few of those more predictable morals come through, Nabeda Yoshiro's authorial flourishes are more than enough to have them hit you in a way you don't expect.

Luckily, Kokou No Hito's ideas are developed and presented in a way that allows them to be realistic and thus feel more earned and authentic. This isn't a manga where characters change through a neat and tidy training arc, and just like in climbing itself, it's often one step forward and two steps back. This gradation makes Kokou No Hito feel fresh and after the early twist, I really found myself reading out of a lust to find out what happens next. Even other great mangas (cough, cough, Vinland) have periods of down-time and inactivity. While KNH isn't perfect about payoffs and side stories, more often than not, they come to a satisfactory close.

Now to completely switch topics; Kokou No Hito's plot material is completely borne from a passion and all the ways that manifests is very cool. From all the branding on the gear to the technical knowledge to the history, one of my favorite niche things is when a manga teaches me about something I had no interest in prior, and through vivid depiction, introspective analysis, and a bit of dramatization, conveys some of that lust for the topic to me. To borrow a phrase, it's certainly made the dark glow of the mountains more understandable to someone like me. If I ever become someone who explores them, this manga will have definitely instilled the seed.
