Anime 18397 Shingeki No Kyojin Ova Reviews Filter Check 2

The cheesiness is strong in this one and it's parent story, the Shingeki no Kyojin TV. The review is written by this aspect and as a separated OVA from that, due to it's "lost episode" meaning. Those who liked the series, don't read more from this and move on to the other reviews.

To be fair, the Shingeki no Kyojin series wasn't a good adaptation at all: the first quarter had a good pace, then it became too slow and slower and slower and in the end, a common snail could be a F-1 race car beside this. And don't mention the unnecessary babbling, without giving ... real information and deepening the characters to make them more interesting. The expedition's running could have been the saviour part for that, after the overly enlonged by direction of the battle of Trost, giving a flag for those, who read the manga, where will be it end. And that flag came closer and closer by every week once the series' episodes were shown. But that's doesn't really matter now.

The chapter, what this OVA has adaptated isn't a really long one, and hardly makes it to a normally long episode, so they put anime-original parts to it, to make matching parts with the series. Even some recap scene came by in the beginning to let us know where to put this in the time line. It's story would be interesting, if it would give us some new information about the Titans (or more like Giants, since kyojin means this), but it doesn't. Only gives another bunch of questions to those what we already have and we could think what's behind them with some mere logic. I won't write down my theory, but I know, most people are already thinking about the same. Even at least one little bit of answer would be good but no, hell no.

The art comes with the same as the series, just like what goes for the sounds, OP, ED et cetera. I kinda like this grotesque and somewhat realistic yet gruesome art, but also, I could say that, what I could say to the manga and the series: it doesn't live up to it's potentials. Or to be frank: could be done better a bit. The OP and ED are the same as the first half of the series, and my thoughts are the same about them: the OP has a really good music, but only from the greatest part of the track and with the pictures and in a whole it's just attitudinizing by awesomeness, what makes it so annoying. The same could go for the ED, with almost everyone's SnK-waifu, Mikasa, who has great potentials by her character, yet utterly misused.

Overall, the OVA's enjoyment falls behind the series', but not far away from it. But you know, I watched it with blank expression, like "yet another meh", which makes it even more equal to the series. Both are mediocre (5 out of 10): while the series was butchered by a half-assed director who had only one good directing on his list (and so far, he couldn't repeated this) and screenplay writer, the OVA has fallen behind because of the series itself, because it couldn't live up to it and because of choosing a not so important part of the story, postponing our first questions by importance to an even more distant time: to the second series, what every SnK-fan is waiting - but I can make you sure: you won't get answers for a long-long time.

These are 3 eps with completely independent content, so I will comment on each ep, of course, the art is of the same high quality as season 1, so I will not judge the art or the music.
Ep 1: The content is a new and interesting story, I think this ep is better than most of the eps in season 1. It arouses curiosity and has a strong connection with the story of titan. The survey corps characters also shine. Get A+
Ep 2: The content is half-hearted, the humor is not good and the drama is not there. Maybe it's just a relaxing ep, weirdness, ... and that's it. Jean is ruined because of this ep. I expect an opponent of Eren, also in terms of psychological value. Get an F
Episode 3: The content is quite simple. A tribute Marco. Behind the scenes story. And especially: the characters are nothing new, nothing interesting. Simply seeing them become friends again, yes Annie... generally a fan service ep. Get a D

I can only really say that this is ok? I guess.

The OVA of Attack on Titan is a mixed bag, you’ll have the No Regrets or Lost Girls OVA which dives into really interesting stories. While this set of episodes are good they just miss the same level of interest that the other OVA had. The narrative leaps from truely interesting to unnecessary plot lines. The sound design is the same as the original if not kind of more ok. The animation is still amazing, and we do get some interesting character insight that we’ve never seen beforehand.

The best of the three episodes was ... the episode titled; Ilse’s notebook: Record of a Fallen Soldier. The episode followed the perspective of Hange, by far one of the best characters in Attack on Titan. We follow Hange attempt to capture a Titan, which leads to Ilse’e notebook. Which described a weird encounter with a Titan that was actually giving hints on the true lore behind the titans and the world itself. Hange’s character and the hints of lore was the highlight of these three episodes. The other two were sorta just there. One of about a cooking competition, and was just Jean being an asshole. While the third episode was actually pretty good. While I consider it pretty unnecessary, it was fun watching the 104th training Corp work together. Seeing their interactions with each other before their Trost district experience. However these last episodes just miss the same interest that I had towards no regrets and lost girls.

The sound design was pretty decent, I remember the sound where the Titan that Ilse posted encountered made such a distorted voice. The unnatural sound made the titans feel that more terrifying. Looking across all three episodes, the sound design is pretty decent and does everything that makes good sound effects. The world feels realistic and the sound effects don’t feel like they were ripped from a stock site. The soundtrack was the same as season one, and anyone who has seen season one can tell you that the soundtrack is top tier. The sound design is about the same quality as the sound design in season one which is pretty good. So I would rate the sound design pretty high.

Majority of the tiers in this OVA series are ranked the same as season one. Which includes the animation. The three episode span demonstrates everything that Makes animation good. Solid line work, grounded character movement, characters seamlessly blending into the environment, etc. I discussed the art style in my previous review, but I will mention again that the art style is perfect. It reflects Isayama’s art style in his manga and whenever you see the art style you instantly know that this is Attack on Titan. It fits the world perfectly and conveys that this isn’t some light hearted world full of fun. The art style shows terrified characters in a disturbing world. While their isn’t as much ODMG use in the OVA, whenever it is there it’s satisfying and amazing to look at the animation. And commander Pixis acid trip was the funniest shit I’ve ever seen, it fit well in such a morbid franchise.

The characters were alright. Only two real aspects of the characters ever stood out to me in the OVA. That being Hange in the first episode and the teamwork of the 104th training Corp in the final episode. Hange in their attempt to capture a Titan and explore the true meaning behind the titans is what makes Hange unique. Majority of people want nothing more then to exterminate them, while Hange considers factors like, what is their origin? Why do they eat humans? Seeing a full episode that explores the best attribute of Hange was amazing. The final episode shows the teamwork of the 104 to save Krista from a group of kidnappers. Seeing them work together was so fun and if you want to see more of the 104 and their journeys. This OVA is definitely for you. The second episode did have its moments, it was nice seeing the characters being happy and enjoying their time together before post battle of Trost District. However, this episode just ended up turning Jean from a misunderstood asshole to a definite asshole.

While I do enjoy these episodes, they are flaws in more ways then one. Great animation, deeper looks into different characters and decent sound design end up lagging behind due to the unnecessary plot lines.

Overall, I rank this 6/10.

I do like watching the OVAs just to see what extra little side stories might be hanging around that might be more in line with the manga but really aren't too far away from being a full episode. Only the second one with the cook off between Jean and Sasha felt like it wouldn't fit too well with the main series, but the little pose Sasha and Connie do as a "fighting stance" is always cute. The third episode about a training exercise gone wrong was perfectly fine, but reminded me of the many MHA training exercise OVAs. The first one was the best with ... some poor girl named Ilse writing down her thought until her death and meeting a titan with some strange, almost religious reverence towards her, thinking she's Ymir. It's got some good moments and Zoe is cool. If you want more from season 1 then you got more.

These OVAs are basically additional content for Shingeki so I'm going to say my opinion that no one asked for about the 3 OVAs

OVA 1: Definitely the best OVA of these 3, showing us a mysterious mystery about the titans (as if there weren't enough already), it is a pleasant chapter to watch and it fulfills its function perfectly: additional content, I give it a 9 out of 10

OVA 2: This OVA tells us about our favorite horse face: Jean , where we see an "epic" duel between him and Sasha , ... this OVA is not something to take seriously, it's 95% comedy, it's decent if you ask me, I give it a 7 out 10

OVA 3:I think this OVA is the worst thing that has come out of Shingeki no Kyojin, to begin with, there is no trace of titans, and yes, I know that Shingeki does not depend on the titans to be good, (the first part of the 3rd season proves it) but that was very bad for this OVA, it doesn't feel like I'm watching the masterpiece that is Shingeki, it has a boring and insipid plot, I give it a 4 out of 10
