I really wanted to love this show, it’s just there is nothing to love, because there is nothing, period. It is entirely devoid of substance.

The series is a monster-of-the-week about three aspiring anime creators, the “monster” being them imagining their various everyday happenstances as fantastical animated dream sequences. There is some glimpse of a plot about their anime-making school club, but that’s not the point, the point is a love letter to the medium, celebrating the creative power of animation. These imaginative scenarios are indeed creative and pleasant to look at. You know what else is creative and pleasant to look at? Actual anime, where ... cool pictures have context and substance behind them. The very first episode of the show illustrates it already: it includes an entire meticulously recreated by hand sequence from Future Boy Conan, complete with the characters being awestruck by how cool it is. Ok, Future Boy Conan is cool, so why don’t I just watch Future Boy Conan? What’s the point of watching a fictional equivalent of a youtube reaction video? Recreating a scene from an old anime without adding anything transformative to it isn’t an artistic achievement, it’s just copy pasting. It’s a rather unorthodox case of failing the “show, don’t tell” principle - the show tries so hard to tell you how cool anime as a medium is, it fails to be an actual anime that is cool by itself. It also tries too hard to be artsy, coming off as artificial, insincere, and pretentious, because the “artsiness” is not supposed to be deliberately constructed. Just listen to Yuasa talking about how they’ve made the main girls ugly on purpose, “to subvert the moeblob trend” - nevermind that one of the girls is supposed to be a photo model - it just reeks of pretentiousness.

And outside of the “I fucking love anime” the series offers nothing. The plot is an excuse for the sakuga moments and the main trio are one-note plot devices devoid of any actual character. There is nothing to care about, empathize with, or be invested into. Nothing to look forward to either, if you’ve seen the first episode, you’ve seen the entire show. There is Yuasa’s art and direction, but again - there is plenty of actual anime also directed by Yuasa, where stuff happens and things matter. The informational tidbits about the technical aspects of the animation process are theme-park level, you’d be better off watching Shirobako for that (and by “that” I mean wanking over how educated you are because you watched a cartoon, someone who genuinely wanted to learn about the real life process of creating animation should watch documentaries). Even the imagination sequences quickly get repetitive and boring because there is only so much fun in watching substanceless moving pictures.
This is not the worst show in the universe, and it’s not like it does something monumentally awful. It’s just there are hundreds of better shows that are more deserving of your time being invested into them.

4/10 for “don’t watch anime reaction videos, watch actual anime.”

First time I've written a review so please don't be hard on me.
After the second episode when they were repairing the rooftop, I realized that they were just pulling stuff out of their ass to create "magnificent art".
However this isn't like the Japanese, they always tried their best to create meaningful art.

Thus their imaginations became so utterly dull and dreadful, like a drawn out sequence of someone opening a door it was forever tormenting my mind and eyes with the stupidity of the show.
Story: 2/10

The characters themselves are fine, the tall woman has certainly the tools to whip the story forward whilst ... the air-head and clumsy creative girl could truly make their work come true. However, the downside is that these creative people are wasting my time with their daydreaming. Yes you heard me, they are daydreaming and we are animating it.
It creates no substance, most of the art spent animated is meaningless.

16 seconds into the opening, dance movements along with the background lights makes me feel sick. Silly faces and closeups do not display talent, a lot of scenes that focuses on the characters have weird anatomy, and not for the sake of looking silly but just plain bad structure. Should be improved upon if they are planning on releasing a Blue ray version otherwise will be a shame for those who spent money on it. It looks rushed. The colour palette used for the anime is very nice and I would like that to be kept for their future anime releases.

Unique voice actors, but one of the "rich girl" voice actor sound off at times when they are goofing around. Like she's not really into it, whilst that's okay since I often don't find Japanese voice actors that sound this unmotivated she does do a good job when she does find stuff to be excited about in the story. The opening song is nothing special, it has repeated lyrics, doesn't really say anything about the show, it's the same as one of their daydreams.
I will give credit for having collected so many sounds for so many different things they had to animate, really nice, and background music isn't disturbing and is actually quite serene, if not playing anything at all at times which is fine but a little bit boring.

"It's good."

How can you even enjoy something that is such a waste of time in the first place. The imaginations of the "creative" girl isn't even creative, it's flashy indeed but it's boring and doesn't have any end results of creating a more imaginative or complex story. It has absolutely no impact on their real life which makes it just a slight show of showcasing random art. It is absolutely terrifying that people would appreciate the time they spent on this. It's as if they would say their daydreaming wasn't a waste of time, which it was! Sleep more on the nights!

The characters have good pro's but their pros are quickly becoming their strongest cons.

I will probably never write a review like this again because if people accept these kind of shows then the future is already decided, we're headed for a Nickelodeon and Cartoon Networks cow & chicken standards. I did not enjoy whatever they were showcasing, they had some funny moments and twists like the business woman using logic to convincing her teacher to give up on going against those three's wishes and them actually getting a place to start off their adventures but I did not find anything more than that to be enjoyable.

Luckily we still have some Directors who know what is truly worth animating besides this guy. I loved Ping Pong the animation but that's because the story was Good and the art was meaningful, everything had an expression to move the story along a meaningful way but not this one.

I think the Directors success might have gotten him a bit arrogant to think that it just has to be "different" to be amazing. I'm sorry but your view on things disappoint me.

I in fact will touch Eizouken and put it in the trash.

Redo, make better choices.

I consider this review to be spoiler-free. Since my opinion was different from the consensus again, I will try to actually add something to the existing soup of reviews by explaining why this show didn’t work for me. There were a lot of great things that rightfully generated hype. The artwork and animation is good, of course, and the music is wonderful as well, though the same tracks were a little overused. The first episode as a standalone is consistently high in quality overall and is really great. The problem is that the show goes downhill from there as the story comes in. The drop ... in animation after the first couple eps makes it so that it isn’t enough to carry the show where the story lacks.

A show can still be great for other things, like if the moment-to-moment humor is great, or the directing is particularly interesting, or maybe if there are just some really cool ideas. But I just felt that everything was mediocre here. This leaves the main story, which was I really thought was lacking. I must say here that unlike most people on MAL, I don’t get turned off of shows by tiny, little things, like single moments or small political/moral disagreements, and plot holes or inconsistencies by themselves won’t make me lose interest in the show. It is very hard for me to explain what is bad, though I will try where others haven’t. A lot of plot points just end up going nowhere. The background art for the world looks great (in the first couple eps) but there is nothing unusual or fantastical going on that would add magic to it, so it’s all just there. Cool new places are introduced, particularly later on, though they just seem like a drive-by and nothing really interesting happens in them. The worldbuilding and sense of place is unsatisfying somehow, and I struggle to explain it [Edit: I agree with some others' assessment that it's mainly to do with story and conflict resolution]. In the end, it fails to capture the magic that is what I love about anime so much, and in the second half I felt bored watching.

This is my first Yuasa show. I’m very slow at watching anime, but I am still excited to someday watch some of his other works that seem interesting.

For more context, I could only leave this review because I did manage to finish this show, and I still liked it enough to give it a 3, which I later raised to a 4. I watched weekly as it came out and I never watch with distractions, sped up, or skip OPs/EDs. It's definitely not a cookie-cutter show and I'm glad others had the chance to enjoy it, but for me it was a disappointment, especially from a story standpoint.

This is shit. The story is very bland. Couldn't connect to the anime. The comedy scene were awful. If you are an anime artist then you would maybeeee like it. But I felt it was pretty boring. I couldn't wait for the episodes to end. Watching next episode was a chore.
This anime is just three school girls trying to make an anime. This couldn't get more boring than that. The characters are not so engaging at all. The only good thing about this anime is its animation and art style.
The story was boring I couldn't connect to its characters. The ... pacing was very slow.
