Anime 42249 Tokyo Revengers Reviews Filter Check 2

Tokyo Revengers hasn't even gone 1/2 of the way through its' runtime, and already the flawless 10/10 scores have come flooding in-- many of which are written by readers of the source material. As someone who's also read the manga, I further affirm that Tokyo Manji Revengers is a fantastic read that had me on the edge of my seat and my heart jumping out of my chest.
That being said, if you asked me if this anime adaption is equally entertaining, or an upgrade upon the source material? I would have to disappointedly tell you that, no, this animated version of the story does not ... make you cry or laugh quite the same as the black and white pages.
Now I'm going to go into a fair amount of detail about the exact reasons for my critique and score, but if you desire a summary/TL:DR I'll leave it right here:
Tokyo Revengers' anime adaptation features an amazing opening song, a captivating time-travel story, and does not do a disservice to the source material by staying true to the plot and making no deviations. Yet despite these good aspects: the cartoonish style of the anime compared to the realistic style of the manga, the abundance of still animation in action scenes and closeups, and the badly implemented soundtrack in otherwise emotional moments ruining the delivery makes Tokyo Revengers an extremely average adaption of an above average manga.

Art: Lets start with arguably the biggest problem with this animation: tone. From a dark and gritty story about criminal gangs-- to a slice-of-life shonen school story, a glance at the art of the Tokyo Revengers anime would make you assume the latter more than the former. A big reason for this is the more elaborate and realistic design of the manga not being adapted into the anime. While one features faces where eyelashes, noses and mouths are sometimes drawn in life-like detail, the other opts for a look that is more akin to Boku no Hero than Berserk. While, on paper, that isn't a huge problem, it tends to ruin the more gritty gut-wrenching moments. The other big problem is that the animation features a lot of stills. Characters don't move or have any dynamic actions; every anime has these; but, even in the action there is a disappointing abundance of still frames, where there is neither dynamic "camera movement" or character animation. In this aspect, I suppose you could ironically say that the anime is faithful to the manga, but simply coloring in manga panels and calling it animation is definitely a negative rather than a positive.

Sound: In this department I'd call it a draw. I both love and hate the sound related aspects of this anime.
Lets start with the positive sides: the opening and ending songs of the anime are beautifully done. Crybaby, the song by Hige Dandism is, I'd argue, the greatest highlight of this anime; it perfectly encapsulates the vibe and emotions of the protagonist into a song, it has elements of despair/desperation in the singer's strained vocals, but also a sense of redemption & determination in the drums/guitar & piano in the backdrop. It is also a plus that the voice-acting cast is well chosen, and all the characters are done perfectly by their respective seiyuus. Every character's voice feels like it belongs, and the emotions within their voices feel genuine and add to every scene. (as for the english-dub though, I might be wrong, as I have less experience there).
However, overshadowing the good, the sound-design throughout the anime is incredibly bland and does very little to elevate the emotions in the iconic scenes. The bigger sin, however, is that rather than failing to elevate the emotional impact of scenes, it actually takes away from the good work done on the voice-acting front. So far, scenes that left an impression on me from the manga have fallen so flat that I would sometimes feel like I missed the scene and have to play it back, only to realize that I simply was in denial that such emotion-filled drama could feel so drab when paired with the wrong music.

Story: This is perhaps the one thing that I think the anime did a great job on, the general pacing of the story is acceptable so far. There are no major story elements of the manga being removed, like with the case of The Promised Neverland Season 2, or changed like in the 2003 version of Fullmetal Alchemist. That being said, it's hard to say much more at this stage as to whether or not the story is executed well, as a story's quality should be based on the sum of it's parts. So as far as this area is involved, I cannot give a proper review until later, when the final episode is aired. For now, lets just say that the story is still fairly captivating, though the art & music for this show is decreasing my overall enjoyment of the plot as well.

Overall Enjoyment: From the standpoint of someone who faintly remembers the plot and is experiencing the story for the second time: the Tokyo Revengers anime is fairly underwhelming, the emotional highs and lows are not the same, and the general aesthetic of the show is inferior to the books. The show is, so far, a bit different to swallow, like a piece of steak that you've been trying to break apart but chewed all the flavor out of. That being said, that might not be the same for first time viewers, and whatever your experience of this fantastic story is, I highly suggest you give the manga a try, whether you pick it up at the end of the anime, or start from 0 or half way, it will surely give you a thrilling ride from start to finish.

Honestly this would have been a really solid series if the protagonist wasn't so painfully unlikeable.
Story wise it's fascinating. A person with a limited ability to time travel using that ability to change past events to protect loved ones in the modern day is a great concept when used correctly. The tight limitations of Takemichi's abilities are brilliant in terms of drama as there's no "reset button", if he fails in what he sets out to do then there's no do over which makes the sense of danger feel far more genuine.
The gang warfare elements are also well done. The tensions between organisations as well ... as personal loyalties and relationships are fairly well established. Though some story elements do fall a little flat, some animosities carrying more weight than seems necessery.

The majority of characters are interesting. Mikey and the founding members of Toman are probably the strongest in terms of characterisation and it is really difficult to not sympathise with these kids.
Takemichi's friends could have been developed a little better and Hina, Naoto, and Akkun honestly feel like they only exist as plot devises with no real substance. It's a shame but it's not really that easy to care about these characters but I'm going to assume that's due to the number of major characters making it difficult to build on every one of them.
Takemichi, our protagonist, is probably the worst character in it, though. Where other characters may not make much of an impact due to simply not being built upon much, Takemichi is just simply unlikeable. He comes off as obnoxious and kind of gross to an extent. He's a 26 year old man who ends up back as his 15 year old self and is probably the most immature of the teen era characters. His obsession with being a virgin is just annoying and it genuinely feels like he doesn't really bring anything to the plot. Most of the time he stands there screaming and something or someone else steps in to deal with the situation then Takemichi gets all the praise for doing absolutely nothing.

A lot of the comic relief moments feel kind of lazy,relying on crude humour or misunderstandings which overall aren't that funny to me personally but humour is subjective so that's not that big a deal.

The animation style is decent.

If the show was just a gang story that focussed on Mikey and Draken it'd probably be more to my tastes personally but you can't win them all.

I never in my life wrote a review, but seeing this Anime and reading through all of the other peoples reviews, I just can't at all understand the overall score this Anime has. It not outright trash either, dont get me wrong, but here is my point of view:

The Story is just shit really. Badly done Steins Gate, FULL of plotholes (and I didnt even try to look for it). Bad writing and nothing special at all.
Girl dies, boy timetravels to save girl.
When I felt like this Anime had a good conclusion in the 12th episode, everything turned upside down yet again, which is ... the reason I might just drop the show entirely.

Add to that mediocre Animation and not so great sounddesign made me really dislike the show.

Having that all in cosideration you could say that its all subjective at the end, but I feel like this show shouldnt be worth the "masterpiece"-status by anyone on an OBJECTIVE basis. This is not on the level of Steins Gate. Never. OBJECTIVELY.

WTF; how is this anime so unbelievably highly rated, I just dont get it.

Tokyo Revengers is probably the most overhyped and underwhelming anime of this season. Do not get fooled by the high score because most of them are probably from fans who read the manga. And some of them gave it 9 or 10 just right after the 1st episode.

First, the animation was bad, mediocre at times but most of the time it was bad. The animation looks like it was from early 2000.

The plot is stupid. The mc one day suddenly gets the power to time travel right before he was going to get isekaid by a train. But it doesn't end here, later in the series Naoto somehow figures out how Takemichi's power works without explanation and it works when Naoto and Takemichi shake hands. Yea... That's it. And with this, they try to fix the past....

Takemichi(mc) is a crybaby and can't do anything. And it's okay for a mc to be like that until it gets so repetitive that is starts to annoy you. While I was watching the series at a point I was like, can the mc stop self-doubting himself for a fucking second? But that's not it, cause he gets more annoying. Despite being 12 years older mentally the acts way stupider than a fucking middle schooler. One thing could be that he didn't grow mentally because of the trauma but becoming dumber than he already was? really? And it seems worse when you compare him to the others character like his GF and friends.


lastly, the comedy was bad and pure cringy at times.

The only thing that kept me watching this was Sano and Ken. And it's not cause they are powerful and whatnot, it was because they act like how a normal human would act if they were in their position. I Also liked Hinata because she was sweet and caring.

the plot is okay. the time travel is not well explained and kinda nonsensical. the fact that time in the future passes while hes in the past and that how takes over his younger body just seems random.
the animation is mediocre but in and of itself its well drawn and looks pretty good.

the main character has no idea what hes doing, isnt interesting and is also a pedophile seeing as hes falling in love with a 14 year old kid. i get that hes in the body of his 14 year old self but he is 26. its bizarre ... and his actions are infuriating. i do mostly like the rest of the cast tho

i hope in the rest of the season the mc becomes less of a retard and the plot becomes more interesting.
now that i think about it, just dont take this anime too seriously, the tone is sometimes serious sometimes completely different and just ignores the gravity of the situation.

after watching the newest episodes i can say this show is retarded. im not mad but i just wasnt expecting the tone shifting like that all the time.

The Time Travel stuff can be mostly complicated. They're not entirely explained, so there's nothing to input on this mysterious genre. Tokyo Revengers is one of those shows fitting itself with the Time Travel aspect to change the future and prevent any menacing things from happening. Like myself as a watcher, I checked this out. From here the show was on a roll for the 1st half of the season, flowed nicely, nothing unbearable and entertaining. Nevertheless, the 2nd half became too much of a nuance and ... dismally presented.

Story (6/10)
The story is somewhat interesting. Trying to save someone you are deeply in love with, is a compelling premise and ideally, fascinate you for what it offers. The first half was actually decent, the foundation layout of the characters, plot twists and the other aspects are what got me attached to this series. I even liked Takemitchy as well (the protagonist). Became 8/10 at first, but oh dear, 2nd half was surely underwhelming. The Vanhalla vs Toman arc displayed the repetitive stuff and delivered the build up in the most poorest way that leaves a huge mark on my face. The problem with this adaptation is the directing. Directing in some cases can present shows with perfect originality and progression. Unfortunately, Tokyo Revengers directing was abysmally produced, for an example, censorship, impactful moments including Baji's death scene. There was something about this that drags the emotion and feels, in which I could not resonate with the characters and the plot.

Art (4/10)
Oh well, this seems disappointing. I'm not hugely impressed with the character designs. This is due to the fact they have pointy lips from side profile view point, which is quite questionable??? and the off-putting eyes, which caught my attention throughout the whole show. But at least the characters do have Drip though. I can point out that. The scenery layout establishes to be realistic and pleasing, which was a feature I liked. Unsurprisingly enough, the animation was average. There were moments where a character gets kicked in the ass and fly unintentionally in the air?? Like why? I know they could have worked on the animation thoroughly more.

Characters (6/10)
I'm going to admit this but I do like some of the characters like Baji, Chifuyu Draken and Kisaki. They have intriguing backgrounds, ideals and personalities, which is pretty gud. But oh no, this series's protagonist (Takemitchy). You guessed it, a cry-baby. Which naturally fits the theme song surprisingly. He's, even more, worse than Deku from MHA, as that dude contribute something. But back to Takemitchy, I can't believe he had to be an eyewitness throughout every single gang fight, which makes the character writing unappealing, and literally CRIES. At least there are some that are understandable, but 80% of most of them are noisome. This doesn't mean all characters are displayed as horrible, I wished Takemitchy's character writing was better with greater character development.

Sound (8/10)
The OP was alright (y'all know for the famous yodelling part lmao). The first ED was groovy and reminds me of IU's Coin a lot, whilst it's playing it at the end. But, the 2nd ED escalated so much better. Its funky, rock mood sets the overall tone of the show better, which got me exceptionally pleased. Now the OSTs. The composer, Hirotaki Tsutsumi nailed the score very well. Personally, it's forgettable but the main theme was the most memorable for me. Hell yes, I get hyped whenever this track appears. The voice acting was impressive and drives each dramatic moment very well, that's all I have to say.

Enjoyment (4/10)
There are some parts that can comedic and I can appreciate them from time to time. But, as I said before, Takemitchy's baby crying moments were bothersome and couldn't help myself but to resist every time he does that. Furthermore, the staby staby moments can be overdramatic and laughable. I also want to mention, about the voice acting again, since I discover one problem. There are characters that are 12 and are voiced by 25+ year old dudes, which makes it painfully confusing and jarring.

Overall (5/10)
It's a mediocre adaption with subpar animation, pointless logic and poor execution moments. It still remains a good flow on the plot and concluded with a settled and captivating cliff-hanger. I wished the directing was much better if S2 is in the production works.

Tokyo Gang Brawling, Violence, Time Travel, Relationships, and Male bonding, such powerful topics to include in anime; but it's all wasted by a brainless protagonist. The more episodes I watch the more flaws appear in this anime. Each of the characters surrounding the protagonist are more interesting, better drawn, change and teach us more about life and the world they live in, than the protagonist himself. Every episode we see the same confusion, tears, and screaming from the protagonist, and every time he time travels he becomes even more useless, when he should be learning and growing. How can he hope to change the ... past or the future, when he won't even change himself?

Fair story, good art, great sound, dreadful main character personality choice, leading to a mediocre anime overall.

It's been a while since I've seen potential in an anime's plot and characters. Time travel, the mix possibility of change, hope, and tragedy; from its characters art to the little sounds of crickets, punches, and voice actors, this anime has it all. I really want to enjoy this anime because it encompasses the male psyche in a world of crime, horror, violence, and primal drives. I feel that I get to experience a bit of what my husband talks about when he reminisces his time in high school fights. The only problem here is the protagonist, he has the brain of a potato. The protagonists mind jumps from confidence, remembrance, to weakness, and confusion; his choices are poor and rooted out of self defeating confusion, in nearly all the situations he's thrown in. While we watch him reflect on his life in both or rather all past, present, and future; he see's and knows his own flaws yet consistently is confused, and scared. Now I don't have a problem with characters or people who aren't smart, or live in waves of reasonable fear; what's holding the anime back, is that the growth that one is expected to see when you are given a second chance, is absent at the most crucial of times in this anime.

Resolve: the drive that propels humans onto changing fate through choices and will. When you care about someone, when you experience real grief; if I told you, you could change their fate, their death, prevent it, improve it, or even give them an hour of life more in happiness, you would do absolutely anything for them, or at the very least think about what you could do for them. We see more resolve from supporting characters than the main character.

Self Defeating Identity: the thing most people hold onto because trauma and expectations due to ones past. The main character has this Identity, unfortunately one of self pity and belief of incompetence. I hope the writers/director has some sort of change in store for the main character; because what's even sadder than a self defeating main character is the wasted potential of the anime.

This anime doesn't have to be a masterpiece, I just wish to see some sort of life lesson spawn out of character growth; in terms of quality of art and music this anime is great.

originally I intended to just let this this slide and, but since the most recent Ep I just can't hold back anymore.
Since everyone and their mom seemed to like Tokyo Revengers I had real hopes for the show and I
... actually really enjoyed the first episodes, but the show just managed to take every part I liked and just threw them out the window.
But given the state the show is in right now, I just can't wrap my head around the fact that people actually think Tokyo Revengers is the best new Gen, or even the best Anime of the current season.

My problems with the show:
First off, for being an action type anime with a heavy focus on fighting, the animation is awful. Most fights are presented in a slide show. With still imagery, which is really disappointing both in a storytelling way, but also just for casual watching, it's just barely watchable at some points.
Granted, not every fight is set up/ presented like this. But that said, its a rare occasion.
The timing is comedic at best, since in multiple occasions the "saviour" just shows up out of the blue and whats even better, just in time before something could seriously go wrong (for example the time Draken was supposed to be killed) I cried laughing when Mikey and Toman just appeared to save them.
The Main character Takemitchi is a mess. My God, this dude is the worst MC i've seen in a long time and its not close. Dude just stands around and cries for 80% of the time and has close to no impact on the story at all, even if we are to believe that he has. He constantly talks about how he's got to act in order to change the timeline and still doesn't do shit. I could write a full essay on everything I hate about his guy, but that would just be a waste of time.
The supporting characters are alright, which is enough to make them the best thing TR has to offer. Or so I thought, but Ep 21 managed to change my mind. After this episode the character development we were given until now has just evaporated. None of their motivations make sense to me.
Mikey jumps between liking and deeply hating everyone around him, Kazutora isn't even worth getting into since his agenda changes like 5 times just in a span of 3 Episodes and Baji just stabbed himself? how is that enjoyable?
I don't get what makes if so difficult for them to get along, even amongst the inner circle of Toman. Everyone acts like they're on their own, yet they ALL "fight"/ work to defeat Kisaki.
This dude is EVERYONES Enemy and yet they fail to make the slightest progress without suffering "huge" loses, or at least that's how the show presents it.

to wrap things up, the most fun i had watching the latest entries to Tokyo Revengers were the OP plays

"Tokyo Revengers" tells the story of Takemichi Hanagaki, a failed adult who, one day, watches a news program about the death of Hinata Tachibana, an ex-girlfriend from her high school days for whom she still had feelings. Some time later, while at a train station, Takemichi is pushed on the railway line and, when he wakes up, he is in his bed, but in the past, when he was going to school and still dating Hinata. The story follows him trying to prevent the death of his beloved, while trying to unravel the mysteries behind this unusual event. Tokyo Revengers is an example of a ... missed opportunity. The protagonist is pitiful, even though he has an adult's mind, he continues to do stupid things and have childish attitudes, in addition to his laughing physical strength, beating anyone.

The story is cool, the time travel plot is quite interesting and the protagonist's motivation is valid. The animation is medium high, but overall it's pretty lively. The characters, apart from the protagonist, are cool, "Manjirou Sano" (Mikey) and "Ken Ryuuguuji" (Draken) are examples of good characters.

In general, Tokyo Revengers is a cool work, could it be much better? Yes, but you can get carried away in some parts. I recommend it for those who like the gang and action theme.

Tokyo Revengers has been quite unique so far...how can I put this ?


First of all,I wanted to say that plot convenience is a huge thing on this anime.I find the time-travel mechanic very interesting but at the same time, questionable.

The way how the Author gives exposition about the situations the MC is Into,how the time-travel works is pretty bizarre.Everything is so convenient,Slowly,It becomes weird and weird until we get to the point where we start wondering: "Just like that...what ?"

The Author doesn't try to elaborate his explanations.He just makes It very simple and also debatable(very hard to believe) regarding the story.

I have ... nothing special at all to say about the Art,Sound,Character.In my opinion they are good and competent (so far,the Studio has been doing a good job).

That being said,I'm still looking foward how this anime is going to end. (btw,I haven't read the manga).

English: The script is shit, the anime breaks from the script in the first 10 episodes with what it proposes as the main plot, and nothing makes sense, nothing at all everything is out of the ordinary, but the characters are lovely and I loved the anime because exclusively of the characters' personalities.

This show isn’t Cliche. I’ve never seen a show where the main character utilizes the ability to time travel this bad before. It revolves around a bunch of delinquents as well. A unique combination if I do say so myself. The show was exciting and I ended up bingeing half the show, but it has too many shortcomings. Even though I enjoyed the ride, it left me frustrated in the end.

This review might give the impression that I totally hated the show, but that’s not the case. Episodes filled me with adrenaline, and I was immersed in the show despite its shortcomings. The show ... had me curious about what was going to happen next and how things were going to end up the way they were. I enjoy the idea of time traveling, so I do have a bias. I hate children, but the characters weren’t bad, and the character developments felt natural. The characters felt they were well done; from their psyche to their character design. Yet, the author wasn’t able to create the anticipation through natural means, but by using bad excuses. So that aspect alone leaves a bad taste.

1)
The main problem the show has is the main character himself, Takemichi Hanagaki. It’s a bad sign when the side characters have more favorites on MAL than the main character himself. It’s for a good reason. The guy is 26 years old and still doesn’t have the cognitive abilities to think. The show is in a constant dilemma. If Takemichi becomes slightly competent, the show would just end, but if he keeps watching the events on the sidelines and doesn’t do shit about it, it becomes infuriating for the viewer.

Takemichi’s incompetency becomes very apparent in the final episodes. My guy has ample evidence that Kisaki plotted everything. That Kisaki was responsible for the woman that got raped, which resulted in Pah-Chin being sent to juvenile prison; for trying to kill Draken, for manipulating Osonai, for creating Valhalla, and for getting Baji killed. So what do Takemichi and Chifuyu do to expose Kisaki? Takemichi spends his days fucking around spying on Emma to see if he’s two-timing Draken, and Chifuyu talks with Mikey the entire time and doesn’t mention this shit. Are you kidding me. The show is creating bullshit excuses to not end itself. Takemichi, you’re not on a vacation bro. If I had time traveled to a different timeline, I would constantly be trying to fix it. This guy just ignores everything and lives life as nothing has happened. Then the show is going to give me the bullshit about how he has to keep pushing forward in the next episode or something. It’s an insult to injury when Takemichi comes back to the present. Kisaki says that he never intended to kill Baji, and Takemichi takes it seriously??? Takemichi never changed the fact that Kisaki intended to fuck everyone. There’s a chance he might’ve become a decent person now, but he definitely intended to kill Baji. There’s ample evidence of it. How stupid is this guy? He’s acting like he wasn’t the one who figured this shit out. Then Takemichi gets bamboozled when he finds out Kisaki was bsing him. Oh wow, didn’t see that one coming. Honestly, it is a bit unfair someone as incompetent as Takemichi is ruining Kisaki’s plans. Poor Kisaki.

A person spending 24 minutes watching an episode shouldn’t be able to come up with better ideas to deal with the situation. The guy is living 24/7 and can’t think of any solutions. Imagine if Takemichi was someone from the Deathnote universe. The show would be over in a day. Even Matsuda would solve this no problem. The show’s excuses don’t only extend to Takemichi, but to Naoto, Akkun, and Chifuyu as well.

Having the power to time travel means the ability to acquire information beforehand. Takemichi and Naoto poorly use this advantage, especially towards the end. So Touman is going to get taken over after the bloody Halloween. Let me ask Draken about this in the future. It takes Naoto ages to find Draken, some cop he is. Then what happens? They talk for like fucking thirty seconds, and it’s a bunch of vague nonsense. Then they chat way after, and they’re able to talk way longer. Then why didn’t they talk that long in the first place? Couldn’t Naoto arrange this? Why is Draken being so vague, and why isn’t Takemichi asking detailed questions? Just tell what happened on that day from start to finish. After talking with Draken two times, Takemichi still has no clue how things will turn out the way they have turned out. The same happens with Akkun. Akkun gives a bunch of vague nonsense as well before committing suicide, although this one was way more forgivable. I’m also left questioning what Naoto taught Takemichi at the start of the show. Takemichi seems like he has no clue what the hell is going on half the time. Naoto surprisingly contributes so little.

2)
I’m convinced he just exists to remove the feeling of isolation that comes with time traveling. The mechanics of time traveling in this show is very convenient. Naoto doesn’t forget about past timelines when Takemichi changes the future, so they’re on the same page every time. Naoto, despite not being competent enough to contribute much, guesses correctly that Takemichi can only go 12 years in the past, and that the handshake was the trigger. Also, Takemichi is able to remember memories from the timeline he’s currently at, even though he didn’t experience them himself. All very convenient. Yet, I won’t hold it against the show since it’s the premise. It’s fiction after all. Shows are built on what if x was a thing, and that’s where the fun is. That’s why I think this aspect is excusable, if we ignore the fact that the show ignored the butterfly effect.

Yet, why doesn’t Takemichi let his past self know what’s going on? Maybe he should leave a note saying don’t try to fuck Emma when he goes back to the future to search for information. A missed opportunity out of dozens.

3)
The action choreography in this show is wild and has problems. First of all, people are invisible. People just can’t seem to see each other in this show. Where’s Draken? Our MC couldn’t find this skyscraper in a small ass parking lot. How do people keep getting hit and stabbed from behind in an open space? Baji and Kazutora must be truly invisible. Also, these middle schoolers have the strength of a superhero. Are they going to start hitting each other through buildings when they become adults? Mikey kicked someone while another person was grabbing his leg. How did the guy grabbing Mickey’s leg end up getting knocked out too? He just got hurled? I know the last one is a minor point, but it still bothers me.

A lot of people seem to shit on the animation, but I just can’t talk shit about animation after witnessing how bad Kumo Desu Ga Nani Ka was. The animation wasn’t the best, but it never ruined my immersion.

Tokyo Revengers, is a mixed bag for me, I find some of the characters charming, but the MC largely annoying, the story can get me excited and on the edge of my seat but it also can seem a bit dumb in places without much thought on getting from A to B.

If your looking for a show with a similar concept to Erased, then this show has you covered, though it is less mystery based (though you will speculate on a lot of things) and definitely the more emotional ride.

My biggest gripe with this show is the mc, he is from the future has the ... ability to go back and forth but is really dumb in just about everything he does. He doesn't know about phones, he doesn't plan, or think about what to do, if he is going to change the past he just goes back and then shouts and gets beaten up saying 'I can't tell you why but please don't, over and over.' His plan literally for everything is to whine, and whilst it can be empowering when getting beaten up and showing grit works out, it gets a bit annoying where he basically defaults to this over and over.
He doesn't bother going to the future to see if something he has changed works out, until after the event in question has already past or just to keep gathering knowledge he could use in the past. He doesn't use his the ability to its full potential in the slightest.

Apart from that I like the characters, Draken is really cool, so is Takemitchy and Hina and generally the side characters are all quite likable and charming, it does well with its side, but the main is just annoying to me.

The story has its problems of some things not being explained that well or maybe seeming a bit shounen at times, but overall its engaging and there are exciting moments in this show.
The animation and sound are fine, I like both the op and ed, I don't really notice the OST but I don't in like half the shows I watch.

Overall would I recommend this show? Well as something to watch this season then yes, its quite fun in concept and has a bunch of charming characters, but if we were to go forward in time a year and this stayed the same quality, I wouldn't say this is worth going back to. To me this is on the better side of decent, I do like it, but it isn't that great or anything. (hopefully I'm wrong and the show shakes things up in the later half)

Fast review: Worth watching? Yes. Will change your life? No. It's a pretty solid series, especially the first 12 episodes, from there, its begins to go down. The plot is quite entertaining, despite of it's predictable most of times, has some interesting plot twists. Some characters are indeed cool and fights are pretty good too .But in my opinion, the worst of this series is his main character. Not for being like a baby always crying, just because it's feels like someone too much idiot in some moments (for being a supossed 20's years old). Just like Gattusso would say: "Sometimes may be good, sometimes ... may be shit".

I've been following this show for quite some time primarily because of all the hype and the numbers it has been producing. Unfortunately, I do not believe this show is at all worthy of its rating on the MAL boards.

This show is mediocre at best, and the main fuel for this show is its energetic display of comradery amongst gang members, which is acceptable, however, not enough for it to produce interesting or unique plot points for the show. The reason why it still floats is because of the use of time travel, even though the time travel method is rather silly but since it's ... anime... I'll allow it.

The art in the anime is very poor as it does NOT fit the essence of the plot at all. The horrors and darkness in the life of violent gangs are childishly portrayed on screen and so are the character design, none of them fit their character, none of it makes sense. The issue this brings up is not only the fact that it is not aesthetically pleasing to look at these cartoon-like drawings but also how much it pulls the watcher away from the story.

The sound engineering is mediocre and the show has an average-at-best opening. The show never allowed the soundtrack to fill in the atmosphere or even have a still where the watcher can sit and absorb the emotions the characters feel.

The characters were pathetic, anybody could see how hard they were trying to push the show with fan service. Every character is one-dimensional and it is very difficult to connect with any of these characters. All of them had generic character tropes and they were followed through and have basically been overused and dry. It is not wrong to not be original, and I admit it is a very difficult feat, however, there was not one drop of originality in them as i knew exactly how all these characters would play out in the show.

However, as mentioned earlier when moments of comradery or feelings of nostalgia ( the urge every individual has) are displayed, it can be rather interesting and enjoyable to watch.

I would not recommend this show to any of my fellow anime viewers.

I can't emphasize this enough, but this show has the WORST possible main character in any show. It is ridiculous how bad Takemichi is as a protagonist. The theme is just rinse and repeat with the main character. Panic, cry, cry, cry, scream, cry, and etc. The amount of times he has cried throughout the show and screamed some nonsense is ridiculous. This genuinely triggered me throughout the whole show... I do not recommend this anime to anyone and I can't comprehend the hype around it or why people love it so much.

The OP is probably the best thing about the entirety of the ... anime. The art is just so half-assed and the plot has so many holes in it lol.

The dumbest or one of, and most annoying main character in any anime I've seen. At no point does the character do something fast, intelligent or witty, and constantly is sorry for himself. The side characters are the ONLY reason you will want to watch this show. The fact that the main character is nicknamed Crybaby really tells you enough. The guy at all points talks about how sorry and sad he is for what is going on while at the same time doing nothing fast enough to believably change the outcome in a show about time travel. He has a plan on what to ... do and spends most of the episode doing Nothing but whining.

Disappointing.

That is the perfect word to describe what I feel about this anime.
First of all, the premise is kinda interesting but the execution is...not good.

Takemitchy, a 26 years old man discovers that his love interest of the time when he was a teenager, died because of clash of two gangs.
After an event he gains the opportunity to go back 12 years in time and now has to follow a plan step by step to prevent the death happening on the actual present of his life.
Do you think that he will try to do his best and make good choices, that ... he will outsmart his opponents with some strategies or that I don't know, be at least useful in any imaginable way, right?
Well, prepare to know now what he does.

He cries. He panics. He overthink everything.
He is almost useless every single time that he is on screen.
I'm not saying that he can't be emotional or weak, because those things can make a great protagonist if done in the right way, like for example, Subaru of Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu.
Subaru is not strong, powerful, influential, threatning or any thing like that.
But he is determined and does whatever is necessary to achieve his goals, even if takes time, effort and/or sacrifice himself in the process to reach what he wants to do at that certain time.

Takemitchy, at the end of the day, doesn't seem to learn or grow at all.
He is an adult in his teenager's body of the past, but he has the mentality of a grow-up man, or at least, should have, you know?
But he makes bad choices or doesn't even think properly before anything.
Some example is when Kisaki is about to enter the Toman's gang, baby boy (that is one of the few names I give to him), see that and what he will do?
Suddenly run on that direction and punch that dude on the fucking face!!!!
What he was thinking? Only him knows what happens on the future and the fact that Kisaki is bad news, a real threat but instead of just act that he is on board with the enemy being close now or trying to be pacient and make decisions that will lead him to get to know more about the guy, he just lose his mind. He is like kid Naruto in a way that when got pissed by someone, went instantly agaisnt the enemy, running like a idiot, not thinking.
But Naruto at the very least, had self confidence, determination and the will to change his life. Takemitchy just...don't have many qualities.
Another moment that he is 100% useless is at the climax of Bloody Halloween arc. Baji is about to die because he is stabbed by Kazutora while Mikey's screwed because he's hurt and has to face many guys that went to take him down. What baby blonde dude does?
Run on his direction? Try to make a distraction with the idea of making time to help Mikey to escape? Look for a weapon on the floor and fight?
Throw something on the enemy?

Nothing. He stares at his friends, crying and thinking:
"OMG, this is bad.
That guy is going to die.
What can I do? I'm useless.
If I could make something..."

JUST DON'T STAND THERE LOOKING LIKE A ROCK, you dumbfuck.
Jesus Christ man, it's infuriating. This guy is unlikeable most of the time.
Not many good things can be said about him.
Some moments he does something but almost 90% of the situations he's the incapable of doing anything. He doesn't even try.

About the other characters, few of them are quite interesting, like Draken, he's one of the biggest reasons to watch this show.
The guy is nice and chill, and of course is strong, has the guts to stand and fight, he is loyal, he is understanding, has a good background.
The scenes that he is the focus I always find myself curious to know more about him. Good character. Mikey is another one that may be boring on the surface but actually has a complex personality. Doesn't show much of what he thinks or feels, but when he does is genuine. Strong, respectful, has great leadership, is a guy that I would follow with no problem.
Hinata is a character that is supposed to be very important on the story and know what? She doesn't appear frequently. She is here is there sometimes, but many times, a completely ghost. Seems like the MC is trying to save the life of a total stranger, even that is somebody that he used to love and date on the past, they two has nearly 0 scenes together.
Before he found out that she died they had being apart for a long time.
And when he goes back in the past to go on the mission to save her life, he doesn't stay much time with her. Why he would like to know her better or stay with his older lover to be closer when he can stay away from her?
After all, connect and establish a trustful relationship with the person he will try to save the life is not important.
It seems that is not worth his time

The characters are okay, in fact, I don't care much about them.

Some things that needs to be addressed:

- The time travel concept is barely explored in any imaginable way and feels like it's only a plot devide to works conveniently in favor of the protagonist.
- Parents, relatives, teachers, police officers, any person that could represent a responsible adult on the story doesn't exist at all.
Only Hinata's mom that appeared one time and that's it.
- The fighting of this shounen is just nonsense. A adult that goes down instantly with a high kick of a teenager, another one that manages to make a dude fly over a long distance, a child who is able to take several blows of iron bar on the head and stand up; etc...So many BS things that are overly exagerrated.

Art/Animation:
The art design is good. I really like it.
The author made a good job creating different and stylish visuals.
The animation are okay, could be better. Some scenes are not clean.

I give a 6 out of 10 here.

Sound 8/10:
I think it's well done.
The opening music is a banger, no doubt about that.
The ending song is really enjoyable too.
The OST's were fitting on the scenes, they are atmospheric.

Enjoyment:
I'm disappointed as I said here earlier.
I expected more. Maybe something more exciting.
The first few episodes are pretty good, but the quality start to drop quickly while you watch week after week.
The final episode had a awful ending, I was like:
"That's it? This is the end of the final episode of the 1st season? Lame."

Truth be told, this is a mediocre series
It's fine, like, watchable and okay at best, being generous, but it's not necessarily good because lacks many things:
A intelligent and well constructed plot, more characters with minimum development, good dialogues, believable situations, dinamic figths and the most important thing: A LIKEABLE AND RELATABLE MC that you can genuinely root for, because this guy is a shame.
I'm sorry, but is a fact.

One of the most overrated anime of the entire year.
Doesn't deserve all the praise it gets, but it is what it is.
I wouldn't recommend it because this wasn't worth my time.
So please, only watch if want to see brainless figths, plot holes, shit MC, a and a overall inconsistent story.

Tokyo revengers start as slow, its overly simple and generic protagonist and almost laughably simple dialogue are somewhat cringy. but what keeps it from being boring is its great story. Throughout the time we spend with Takemitchi and his friends it became not only a task to save his girlfriend but his friend delinquents also
Revealing many shocking truths as we discover traitorous friends.

While there are many things I have problems with. Minor ones being the fact that somehow all of the high school delinquents look like 30-year olds with no parents running around the city like there are no people seem somewhat unrealistic to me. ... but I will let it pass since it's an anime.

The major issue that I have is its time travel aspect on the way it is narrated
The show is often overlooked by many people...

Time travel is no stranger to the world of anime. From heartbreaking plot twists and lovable characters, it never fails to amaze me how we explore a seemingly impossible story.

While there are many shows about time travel what makes this different from the rest? you may ask.

The author of this series didn't particularly think about the consequences of time travel. It failed as of right currently 13 episodes in to properly explain how it works because there are certainly many paradoxes. For example, how was Naoto able to remember how hinata died or knew what akkun's last words were from a seemingly different timeline. If he was able to change the death of a person wouldn't the information be somewhat altered as well? Who the fuck tells people they are time travellers, there must be some sort of consequence for that.

In short, it's not about the concept of time travel but the way it is presented makes a story more valid. Stories like Steins Gate clearly show the consequences of time travel but nonetheless gives a much more logical solution to a hard problem. But this seemingly ignored all of that, i had the somewhat same problem with erased but this is much worse

An interesting story completely butchered by the pace and the writing decisions.

For starters, it involves time travel (which we all now it's a really bad idea for a show unless you do it perfectly). The MC travels back in time to fix something, and when he comes back, things seem to change at random. His life remains completely the same despite changing his past, and some characters that should have forgotten things remain aware of what went on in the original timeline.

The show also fails to decide what tone it wants to pursue. Sometimes it seems to want to be a lighthearted comedy shonen, ... others it wants to be the most serious and mature of shows. In the end, it does none well.

The show also cringely idealizes gangs and gang violence. Like, I would love it if the show portrayed gangs properly, as what they are, and showed the consecuences of being part of one. Instead, the MC and his friends are this kindhearted guys that just want to be happy and free. They might take part on gang violence, yes, but they are soooo polite and friendly, they are not bad guys at all!!!. Like, the MC has a girlfriend that is super kind and polite, always helping others, but she doesn't seem to have a problem with his boyfriend being in a fucking gang.

This show has potential, but ends up being a mess.
