Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is basically a setup for an epic but inconsequential final fight, with competent but unremarkable and simple story. This story however undermines the plot of the main series and leaves stupid, unnecessary questions that lay unanswered.

Plotline is as generic as it gets: a protagonist which wants to save his loved one from a curse and antagonists which believes that might makes right and weaklings should worship him as a god. The only strength of this story is Yuuta's development. Our protagonist starts out as a shy, scared and bullied boy which gains confidence and friends throughout the runtime. Nothing original, but execution ... is good enough to make it somewhat compelling.

Maybe it's me, but i found relationship between Yuuta and Rika very weird. I know that falling in love with someone at a young age is a popular trope in Japan, but it still weirded me out enough to never take this relationship seriously.

Protagonists strength is also a problem, he basically can one shot the main antagonist of both the movie and the main series undermining Getou's threat as a villain. Yuuta's absence is also unexplained in the anime. I had to google if there was a reason at all and it is there, mappa just doesn't care to put it in their work.

Talking about unexplained, fate of Getou after the movie is also totally cut out from the anime. With how he ended up in this movie you would expect something referencing his past in the anime but nope.

Another thing about this movie is that it is a terrible idea for a prequel.
Yuuta much like Itadori is new to the Jujutsu high school and so movie has to often stop and explain how things work to its protagonist. It would be fine if it wasn't the second time we have to hear those explanations.
Not only pacing of this movie suffers from constant explaining but there is also no tension as we know who survives and don't feel anything when characters get into tough spot. We know they are gonna be ok so who cares if it looks like they are about to die.

Let's talk about the finally which suffers from the same issue. The scale of what is happening is enormous. Basically if villains win its the end of the world, what does it mean? It means that they won't win. We know that Tokyo, Kyoto and jujutsu high school survive this movie so antagonists have to fail from the start. It is a fundamental failure in concept which should have stakes at a much smaller scale. to be compelling. It is also funny how unresolved the final fight in the cities is. Movie doesn't even bother to show a resolution to a duel between two of the strongest humans out there.
Final fight between Yuuta and Getou is also unsatisfying as our protagonist is op and far stronger then the antagonist.

I should also say that this movie has a lot of cringe humor which made me feel like a weirdo for watching it in a cinema.

Technically zero is much better then plot wise.
Mappa put all of their hearts into making a spectacle and they succeeded.
Their high quality of animation features a lot of movement and crazy fight scenes with camera panning around to showcase crazy choreography (which sometimes feels like it defies gravity). Outside the fights some of the more simple scenes looked nice as well, with simple walking in the corridor feeling good.

Sound effects were always on point whether it was a fight scene or sounds of footsteps. I had some mixed feelings about the soundtrack. While the quality and variety was very good I felt like it sometimes was inappropriately intense for what was going on. I also have to say that iconic voice of Shinji from Evangelion worked really well for the protagonist and i enjoyed the performance of the voice actors as a whole.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is a mixed bag of amazing animation, mediocre personal story and overall bad plotline.

First viewing of a non-english speaking film in a cinema, so that was a nice experience.

I consider the volume 0 manga counterpart to be better than the main series, and my feelings here remain the same; the film is better than the show. Its central narrative premise is intriguing, containing a rather saddening concept that beats out Itadori’s generic shounen story.
Because I have similar feelings of this to the manga original, that means I share the same problems. Mainly how the fighting exists just because there needs to be action. The transition in focus from Okkotsu to “war” felt like 2 non-correlating threads just ... forced together. I must add how all tension is lost too, either from already knowing the outcomes because of manga, or knowing outcomes due to callbacks in the original show (they mentioned how Okkotsu was away overseas). Film also did a good job of being a prequel that you can watch first before the show, giving brief explanations of the world.

Adaptation wise, it was a well done job. Mappa is of course extraordinary with animation, really setting new standards and proves they utilise a movie budget perfectly. The soundtrack is more effective and memorable compared to the tv series also. If I had to pick out something, it would be how obvious it was that this is just 4 continuous episodes as a film. No fluidity between them, quite disappointing.

Jujutsu kaisen either the series or movie has some really crazy production values in the animation looking clean as fuck as well as really fluid secuences of fightings and overall every single movements (which is not common standart to see in most animes).

What i have more than understood after having watch the series and now this movie is that what exceds in an outanding animation and really beautiful ost lacks in all the others aspects like characters developing, story, pace, and narration. Shonen animes never had as an strong point the complexity and intrincancy of their stories neither their characters, but here what separates ... an bad or mediocre series from an actually good or amazing one its how well the plot and characters are handled this wasnt the case although and i can mention some that make an good job like hunter x hunter, one piece, naruto, bleach (skipping almost all the fillers).

I dont gonna go deep in every detail but characters wise like in the series with the protagonist and others ones of the cast were too flat and rushed as fuck in their developing (in this movie its more of the same), my problem is not the archytype that we can see in most cases but an really poor treatment in the direction and portraying of them.

This movies felt like forced some moments making it really hard to actually feel any kind of emtion toward the character in this case Yuuta Okkotsu in all his past and actual events that took place in the movie, funny enough one of the few characters that were more than decent and i could even go so far like good were gojou and getou (to name some) and the reason is very simple those ones so far until this movie had an more organic progression even if their screen-time is relatively short in comparision to other ones were so much more well full fleshed ones.

To me jujutsu kaisen as an whole really left me indifferent its feels hollow in essence, besides some really crazy fighing moments accompained with nice soundtrack just doesnt detaches any kind of emotion to the viewer it fail in the more important things (under my opinion) that make an memorable series, there is an certain degree of attention that its needed to put (independently of the genere) to the plot and cast to deliver something that at least its good.

Jujutsu kaisen 0 its more of the same in a bad way, the series and this movies are an forgetable experience, both have beautiful scenearies and animation but it just end up there, its frustraiting how bad handle are most things and yeah i could appreciate some things but in the big scheme feels really bland. This is an good example that high production values doesnt equal an good series, i have seen so much better shonen with more poor animation but that surpass in anyhting else to this one.

Jujutsu Kaisen Episode 0


The biggest problem with this "movie" is that it's not really a movie. It's just 4-5 episodes stuffed together with a bigger budget and released as a movie. However, the content is like regular JJK episodes, it's like suddenly releasing the middle part of the first season as a movie, who would actually care about that? It could have been handled much better as a kind of double ova, but at least they made some money out of it, is that all that matters?

Otherwise, the movie was reasonably entertaining, it was fast-moving and introduced a new "important" main character who is suddenly ... a star and a walking protagonist cliche bomb. Then they went on normal missions and nothing really happened for half the movie. Until the point where the big finale suddenly started. After the time skip, the blubbering wimp of a character had suddenly become a badass and master fighter, there was an epic animated final fight, and tada. That was pretty much it, the movie had nothing else worth mentioning. Especially since the constant flashbacks attacked the pacing.

I liked the movie, it was good to watch as well, but the fact that this is supposed to be a movie is just amusing. It's practically the same problem with the Mugen Train from Demon Slayer, cool to watch but would have been better as a series.

An average movie, there was nothing else to it.

This is a movie that I can faithfully say it needs to be a TV show.
Since it is a movie I review it is a movie, and as one that already has a foundation.

I will begin with the fact that this is a 90 minutes movie, a short one and if the studio decided to make a movie that short they need to understand the price it takes( and sadly they didn't).

In a TV show there is more time to space things out, you can play with the pacing more freely and you can build your characters as you like.

A movie is a different thing. ... The studio needs in 90 minutes to introduce multiple characters and their story, build the world around it, and push it towards the end goal all while keeping the pace fresh and the story clean and understandable.
This is the major fault of the story.
The movie takes too long to build characters (specifically the main) and they do it poorly and in a C'liche manner.
The pacing is also let loose, one moment they build a tense scene and the moment you think a cool fight scene will occur a flashback is thrown, to introduce a new character for the sake of the story, but by completely killing the flow and destroying the scene. Once the flashback is over we are cut to after the fight which we don't see. And is leaving you in questions as to how the fight ended.

Those flashbacks, happen multiple times in this movie, each time trying to prove a point or build a character further but they destroy the pacing and damage the flow, there are even flashback that are showned twice, and some that are completely not necessary since they show something that happened 5 minutes earlier!

Another issue is the character, the main one. The studio spends about 30 minutes of the first third of the movie to build him up, all while throwing flashbacks that don't help but also add lines that are completely generic and not unique. as for why he fights, his promise to his friend and as why the villain is a villain.
None of the new characters that are shown is having enough time, since its a movie..

I will fresh things up, not all is horrible. This is a movie done by a known studio (MAPPA) . and their art is showing it's stand.
The expressions are seen amazingly, and fight scenes are incredible.
For this alone it is worth watching (but not as a movie).
The sounds are also good. The voice actors giving their all and worth of praise.

However! (Back to the bad)
A major this that let me down..
Censored/ cut content.
Since the studio took 30 minutes to build a character not much is left for fights and not much screen time as well for all the other characters.
Todo was shown for barley a minute and never seen again, as well as everyone else that we saw in the TV show, each one was showed for barley a minute and some for even less.
The sensation that it gave me is that the studio just either ran out of budget or time.
Another sad thing is that in order to be more friendly to the movie audience they censored major parts.
A character was severely damaged, but so we are told. We dont see how bad the injury is. Same with even small sorceress that don't have a name.
Instead of showing them being crushed, butchered or burned we see blood splatter instead..
This is sad since the audience that will go to watch the movie WANTS to see this, cause the first audience you must speal to is the fans.

In conclusion.
This is an average movie, at best.
In 90 minutes I didn't understand the world building ( and honestly you can't, there is a reason that adaptation of books/ manga is best as a series or multiple movies. Not a stand alone movie).
Character were introduced yet weren't special and their story and goal is typical and offer nothing new.
The cut content that doesn't show enough of everyone, the censored parts that distinguish this anime from others are lacking.
Pacing and flashback that are a mess..
For those reasons I believe it is best this movie to be as a TV show.
Cause then flashbacks are acceptable, the pacing is normal for TV shows,
The characters can have more time since its longer, fights can be more builded up properly and many things more.
I won't be surprised if they will do what demons slayer mugen train did and release the movie later on as a TV show..

I just watched the movie in the theater

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 can be summed into: This movie could have been cut in half and would actually end up better.

It is simply filled with slow boring scenes that dont do that well of a job of telling the backstory of what's happening. Overused flashbacks, extended "explanation" and repetitive dialog, all of that is what makes the first hour of this movie painful to watch. At the same it doesnt tell enough about the MC story and his progression do justify how he got that powerfull near the end, the time jumps and character development simply doesnt fell natural, and when it ... reachs the end, even after all that gorgeous battle, it doesnt fell like it had paid off.

I dont understand what exactelly were they aiming for with the way this movie was made, if they were trying to get a new audience while also pleasing old fans, they just did a bad job, because as a starting point this movie is simply a somewhat bad and boring experience, and while the midle to the end section is better overall, it simply wasnt good enough to justify what was done. The movie simply isnt in the same level as the anime

Just saw the movie premier and all I can say it is a major downgrade than the TV show.
The story revolves around a single character and his tragic loss. He is the same stupid generic MC you see in every Slice of Life anime with puddle deep character development.
As you would expect he starts weak and starts outshining the villain of the story just with the power of lOvE and FrIeNdsIP.

The only thing that was worth the watching/hearing were the Visuals and Audio.
Went with 4 people and the average score went from :"It's ok" in the beginning to "meh" by the end.
It's like the movie ... was made for kids who are transitioning to becoming teens.
And in blood and gore for the EdGe but we have to add these plain and boring plot points because their minds aren't actually developed yet.

What? The adult audience? The actual people who are buying our stuff? Naaah. Who needs them?

I am sure you can go on living without watching the movie.

Basically, this is just Demon Slayer. I came for Jujutsu Kaisen not Demon Slayer. It reminds me of when the marvel guy directed Justice League, and no matter your thoughts on the Snyder cut, the original felt very un-DCU

Scenes feel very disjointed. Like every scene was different people working on it without communicating with each other with no director to patch things up and make everything flow. The scenes individually were nice but I guess the director was just really bad at his job. No chemistry between characters. Characters themselves are fine and are acted ... well, but something about how they respond to each other doesn't work.

Typical convoluted and stupid villains doing random shit for no reason. Unlike in the main series, there isn't the one or two well written villains with actual motives behind their actions to distract you from the evil because evil that all the other villains are.

Gojo does equally convoluted and stupid super hero stuff, as you'd expect, but Gojo's cool enough to pull it off.

If you're a fan, you still gotta watch. If not for the action then because it's important for the main plot.

IF you have NOT seen season 1 of Jujutsu Kaisen or read the manga chapter 0.1-0.5, start there, it will make the movie better for me personally, you won't appreciate the characters who pop up throughout the movie without prior knowledge. If you are a jujutsu Kaisen fan it's definitely worth watching but given that it only covers the first half-chapter of the manga, there is no actual plot development here and even if you are theoretically supposed to watch the movie prior to watching the series, after watching, I feel that it wouldn't make sense and the characters would just feel random, weird timeline ... but here we go, let's start the review. The plot of the movie saw progression with Okkotsu and rika but the actual jujutsu Kaisen verse didn't see any new things which made the highly-captivating nature of the tv series kinda gone here and quite boring. This movie is essentially a romance but it wasn't really done all too well, like the female mc, rika gets like 5 lines, you have got to develop characters more bro, they should honestly stick to shonen, the whole war thing(not a spoiler you have no clue what I'm talking about dw) was very cheese and the tearjerker were annoying. I liked Yuta Okkotsu's backstory but they didn't really do a whole lot more with him apart from watching him train, apart from the final fight, he essentially stays the same character, just a more timid version of Yuji Itadori with the goal of saving his lover. I guess the appeal is that he finally finds a reason to exist and meaning in living after his tragic past and attempted suicide and the movie depicts him learning to love the world, you might like that but it didn't touch me a ton personally, it was nice but idk if it was truly touching. Back to the emotional scenes, they were really generic and typical and you got to trust me coming from a romance fan, I don't mind the typical tearjerker but they were too cheesy man. The one at the end was kinda nice and really well-animated but still annoyed me. There is a huge plot hole at the end I don't wanna spoil but you can probably figure it out, that also annoyed me. It still gets a 7 because it was still objectively an enjoyable watch due to the TOP TIER animation and a good soundtrack. Also, I personally think Gojo Satoru is a really well-designed character, yeah he is definitely OP but his dialogues, character design, and abilities are a big standout for me and I'm excited to see more of him in season 2. Interested to see if we see him and Yuji Itadori work together, they both have tons of plot armor and op abilities. TLDR: if you haven't read the manga or seen the show, don't watch and do that first, if you have, it's a nice watch. As always, thanks for reading if you made it, -nashy out

I liked this movie but at the same time I'm grateful that I waited until it hit streaming to watch it rather than spend $10+ on a movie ticket for it, though it was not a bad movie. I liked Yuuta and his character journey from meek straw in the wind to someone who can lead. It was also nice to get to see Maki, Panda, and Inumaki get to have larger roles as well. I liked having Getou as the main villain. The action sequences were good and I liked the designs of the curses. However, there were times in which the movie felt ... less like a theatrical release and more like an OVA or ONA gaiden despite the quality of animation. It kind of wanted to meander in the first half and even at times in the second half. Though it wasn't a bad kind of meandering, but it was surprising.

I think that if you liked the first season of the anime and don't mind a movie that wants to linger in places, then you'll probably like this movie too. I thought the ending was good and fit well with the story the movie was trying to tell. You'll also want to either let the credits play or fast forward to the end of the credits to see the bonus scene. Luckily I figured there would be one so I didn't miss out on it.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 feels extremely rushed. The movie, although spectacular visually, has a severe pacing issue where certain scenes felt too fast while others felt too dragged on. Characters that served zero purpose in the movie were constantly phasing in and out of scenes taking up time that could've been spent on fleshing out the characters more.

Story-wise, the origin story of Yuta and the main conflict between Gojo and Geto have their moments. Yuta's story introduction managed to hold my interest well up until Gojo began his monologue to Yuta. Although it made sense, Gojo's entire speech to Yuta just felt very bland. Regardless, ... Yuta's story had me interested. How it was handled was very disappointing.

The movie very quickly shows its flaws the more it goes on. Certain training montages are spliced with poorly timed comedic scenes that feel jarring at best. Cut-in comedic moments plague many scenes in the movie that end up ruining the pacing of the story for the brief moments that they're included. Mainly, it was Gojo and Panda that were the two biggest offenders of the movie for comedy. For a movie with a more serious, darker tone, the comedy really ends up messing with the story.

The problems with pacing don't end with comedy, however. The plot-significant scenes of the story felt oddly paced at times, where the movie would jump between scene after scene in Yuta's gradual development from zero to hero. What made it worse was during the second half of the movie, where these gaps in time were much more apparent. Sure, they don't necessarily have enough time to flesh things out (it is a movie, after all), but had they used more time in scenes developing the cast rather than comedic cut-ins, then more time could've been allocated to helping the characters.

Another issue arises in the second half as well. During the final climax, we are constantly swapping perspectives between the main fight and a bunch of unnecessary fights that serve to drag on the movie. These scenes end up dragging on the movie and could've been cut for more important scenes. Instead, we are left swapping between low-stakes filler fights and a serious, high-stakes fight that would determine the fate of the world. As a result, both fights are less impactful, and the main climax feels less significant.

Animation-wise, this movie was great. The fights, for example, even if they were mostly not needed, were very well choreographed and animated near perfectly. I have no complaints there. The sound was also great, but some scenes lacked impact due to poor sound choices, such as when an insert song would cut the audio of a large attack. Regardless, the sound and sights you will see during this movie are most definitely the highlights.

In short, JJK 0 is a visually great movie with good sound. Unfortunately, the story and characters are its shortcomings, as the pacing, tone, and characters are all over the place. This movie felt overall rushed, which concerns me for future MAPPA products as it seems that they really have not learned their lesson.

As someone who only watched about half of Jujutsu Kaisen and then decided to watch the movie because I wanted to be proven wrong. I really wanted to like JJK more, unfortunately it just reaffirmed my apathy.

It was a 6.5/10. All around predictable, action was good when it was on screen. Yuuta didn’t get enough time to develop, so I didn’t really care about him. This movie was inferior to Mugen Train in almost every way. Less impactful and less emotional. Mappa cannot touch Ufotable in visual, sound, nor art style. The battles were cool, but really choppy. Like why did they cut in between ... two unrelated battles in the 3rd act? It just feels like interruption. For comparison, Akaza vs Rengoku went uninterrupted completely, makes immersion that much better. The two climax battles going on in JJK 0 were disconnected from each other.

Geto is not threatening, even when he tries to be. Explaining his plan to his team was really goofy, and became a tone issue for me. His ideology is no different from any usual villain that wants a world ruled by strength. The plan relies on the most basic distraction, where none of the school staff even thought it might be a good idea to look after Yuuta, despite Geto openly expressing his interest in him in front of everyone.

But the last scene with Rika could have been good, if they had built any more than the bare minimum of a childhood friend relationship. All around, it was by the books shounen and I still don’t think it’s popularity is warranted.

I’d say if I had to say one thing to define this film for me: Undercooked. It is basic, no real consequences or developments.

The movie was good but nothing more than that

Everything starts from the fact that the story is written in such a way that everything happens very quickly, so I felt the film not so much as a story but more as an informative film, I do not feel that the story is something very important since for me the goal of the movie is more to put viewers in context for the things that are coming up in the original story

obviously it's not just that, the movie also improves some characters like Gojo, Inumaki, Maki and especially Geto who seems to me the best of ... the entire movie mainly because of his presence and realism

The story itself is entertaining but as I said its main function is to inform and not so much to tell such a developed story, the story of Yuuta and Rika seems good to me, the festival of the 1000 demons was also good and in general it is entertaining but how I said everything happens very fast

And obviously the production is the second best thing in the movie after Geto, especially the ending for wanting to highlight something

In summary, the movie is more than all informative and does not focus so much on telling a super developed story or something like that, although honestly I would have preferred them to lengthen the story a little more because I liked it and make a mini arc instead of a movie to add more things

Jujutsu Kaisen beta v0.012

The show never ceases to amaze me with how bold and focused it is. How every scene screams "This is fucking Jujutsu Kaisen bitches". It has the perfect amount of edginess and swag while being a little bit angsty and funny at the same time. This is all amplified by the unique synthesis of sound mixing, editing, razor-sharp pacing, great script, original ideas, and that excellent horroresque techno soundtrack. While also pushing its genre boundaries in a proper Rian Johnson manner. I have seen it four times already and the enjoyment of it did not suffer. tldr its pog af.

The movie, on ... the other hand, feels like Akutami-sensei is just testing out the waters and is currently in the development of his world. It does not carry the trademark that makes the show so awesome. The structure of its source material, unfortunately, didn't translate well into the movie format and as a result, the first two acts feel aimless and inconsequential. I can't say I did not enjoy it, it has some good moments here and there and the last third kinda saves it from leaving a bad aftertaste. The relationship between Rika and Juta is a great idea that deserved to be much more fleshed out than it was and Geto could have been incorporated into the movie much earlier.

Would recommend…. mostly

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is named the prequel of Jujutsu Kaisen, yet fulfills a different role. Instead of shedding light on “how we got here”, it's a movie worth of buildup for the character Yuta, a Jujutsu sorcerer who is in the same class as the second years Maki, Inumaki, and Panda, and for one of the major villains in the main story, both characters promised to show up later in the show. A completely cannon movie that works as a plug-in to the main franchise, it contains substance that most shounen movies do not have. Furthermore, adapted by MAPPA, and with the same ... writing team and directors as the cannon story, It was sure to succeed the manga variant, yet surprisingly it didn’t.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 adapts the manga counterpart almost identically, albeit a couple extra scenes which were handled well. While this is a strange thing to criticize it for, the manga for Jujutsu Kaisen 0 was not formatted amazingly for a screen adaptation. It jumped around quite a bit, and really only focused on developing the characters Yuta and Geto, great development, but the surrounding story clunky and weird. The story was cut and paste, chapters taking place after large periods of time, and little substance aside from pure focus on Yuta. Half the scenes were under 2 minutes and were literally just jabbed together, containing at least 5 substantial time skips and 3 missions in its 1h 45 minute runtime. I was expecting MAPPA to add quite a lot more flesh and development to the movie, like scenes with the other characters, or more background information and buildup(like they did with jujutsu kaisen’s main story), but not much was changed. They added a few character cameo’s, a couple of extra fights, and cool animation, but nothing really substantially speaking.

Yet, I still recommend, the source materials' strength bleeding into its final product and saving the rather weak story. While the presentation of the source material was done rather strangely, the character development, and the subtle things that anime studio’s can do competed to a manga were ever present. The animation was constantly great, and the music was rather decent. The direction left more to be desired, and the final fight felt shallow, but the core story was a good one. It was not written like a shounen movie add-on until the final fight(which was like 50% filler) and the story outclasses in writing quality, most to just about all of what is currently adapted of JJK.

I do recommend, but know that it is far from a narrative masterpiece.

(Also, Regal I want my money back. I was never given the limited edition, promotional movie booklet, the whole reason I watched it so early and at the movies)

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is my first exposure to the series entirely. It’s a prequel that’s chronologically first, and after watching it I agree when everyone says you could watch it first if you wanted. At worst the climax has a bunch of characters show up that seem like they’d be exciting if I knew who they were, but that’s the only time I felt “left out”.
However, this movie feels like it cut a lot of content to jump to the climax more quickly. I know this is par for the course for movie adaptions of manga, but it seemed especially bad here (as explained later). ... It might be better to read the manga if this is true.

The movie (and presumably the show) using curses as a concept to work around is a very cool idea. Turning what is normally just a bad thing and developing it into something helpful means that there’s a lot of room for unique creativity. Our protagonist Okkotsu has a curse that protects him when he’s in danger, but it does it too violently so he has to control when it procs. A little basic but not lame. Another main character, Inumaki, has speech that actually manifests into reality. This can be super dangerous if he, say, tells someone to die, so he has to be careful with it while also being able to weaponize it.

The problem is that these are the only two curses in the movie that have that double-edge sword idea…or are even properly represented as curses. Every other curse appears as a yokai-like creature that most characters end up destroying with weapons. The groundwork for the curses to be interesting is there, but the movie left me starved for it.

My other main problem with this movie is the writing. There are lines that sound like they’re meant to be taken seriously but just come off as asinine — too many to count. For example, “He has over a thousand curses at his disposal” is a point brought up multiple times that’s supposed to be threatening, but just sounds silly. A lot of people criticize shounen for…well…feeling aimed at young teenagers, but even as an adult I haven’t had that kind of problem with the shounen I’ve seen.
Until now, that is.

I'm not too satisfied with the ending, either. The villain’s plan is actually pretty well-done and sets up an exciting stage for a climax. But my issue mainly comes down to the protagonist being extremely powerful out of nowhere. He goes from bumbling weakling who knows nothing about curses/using a weapon for the whole movie, then jarringly turns into a serious master sorcerer and swordsman at the climax. The only explanation we get for this is that it’s been “three months” since he enrolled, which is absolutely not enough time for that anyways. He’s referred to as a unique “special grade” for the entirety of the movie and this tonal shift makes that “He’s a special protagonist” feeling all the more irksome. Despite that I still liked the guy and his curse, so the ending and the fact that he’s not actually a big part of the main series at all is extra disappointing.

Not everything about Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is unfortunate though. Despite the aforementioned writing problems, I did end up liking all of the characters. Okkotsu is a good and unintentionally funny lad (despite his protagonist privilege). Maki surprisingly came off as cool with a neat backstory. Panda was a funny guy whose fighting was raw as hell (despite his curse not being explained). Inumaki’s powers are neat and properly highlighted and he’s also a good boy. Gojo was a smart and laid-back guy that was enjoyable (despite suffering from "OP unexplained power”). And the antagonists, Geto chief among them, were written well enough (despite their unoriginal motive).

I think the characters and curse idea are very good, but they’re just bogged down by writing, pacing, and creativity issues in this movie. I started the movie thinking I would be all-in on this series, but left it discouraged and worried that it would suffer from the same problems. In the end I’m intrigued enough to still want to experience Jujutsu Kaisen, but I wonder if watching this movie first will leave a bad taste for it in your mouth…

This might be a hot take, but I don't think this should be a movie and it'll be better if this split into episodes instead because this just don't have that movie vibe compared to Demon Slayer. The story was pretty short considered it's a prequel.

Yuta is pretty good main character and that I wanted to root for him, I would say Yuta is a better main character compared to Yuuji. Animation was good, except some of the CGI, which both are ok compared to god-tier animation studio like Ufotable. The story was fine and can be messy sometime. Like why Yuta was so ... desperate to kill Geto although there wasn't a scene where Geto was actually behind Rika's curse?

I felt that something is missing from the movie such as the buildup for the final battle except showing Gojo, Nanami and Mei Mei in action. Geto's squad all felt empty and no specific reason on why they join Geto, I guess they just want to fight.

I believe that this movie is to show how Yuta trying to learn his powers and befriends with his classmates in school, which is better if the movie focused on that. Like first half show the relationship between students and the other half is where Geto appeared and the final battle take place.

This movie could have been a masterpiece if buildup the narrative felt naturally and properly. Which is why I felt this movie was just "Ok" and didn't leave an impact on me compared to Demon Slayer. Although Demon Slayer story is simple compared to JJK but I like Demon Slayer more because it has more weight than JJK.

However, this movie is just 7/10 for me because the structure/progression of the movie need to be polished, such as showing more montages of him training instead of showing "3 months later" where it's convenient but it doesn't feel like 3 months to me. But, the characters are good enough for me to appreciate them more in the JJK universe, Maki best girl btw.

Jujutsu Kaisen Zero is a movie that came out on March 18, 2022, and was a highly anticipated film for fans of Jujutsu Kaisen. It is a prequel to the original anime, and an adaptation of the manga, Jujutsu Kaisen Zero. The reviews were extremely positive, with a 99% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and 8.2 stars on IMDb.
Jujutsu Kaisen Zero: The Movie, is very faithful to the original source material. The manga is 200 pages and spans 4 chapters. The purpose of the manga was to give more context to characters that did not have as much development and show the war that ... Gojo mentioned in the original mangaka. It is a side story that was written without regard for pacing or actual development of characters but as a list of things that happened before the war and during the war. It is a great 30 minute read to get to know the characters you already know and love, however, it lacks an actual narrative as it's just a side story.
The movie faithfully adapted every panel and every dialogue box. The only thing the movie added was a little piece of the ending, but that is all. A toss-away story, adapted into a major blockbuster film, marketed as being the “prequel” to the original anime so people who have not watched or read Jujutsu Kaisen, can enjoy the film too. That was a lie!
The main focus and protagonist of the movie, Yuta Okkotsu, was as interesting as a cardboard box. He is your typical bland anime character with no personality and no ambition. Although the film follows beat-by-beat the Hero’s journey, it did not get me invested in his journey. He is introduced as having the same level of power as the strongest in the world while being incredibly inexperienced and scared of this special world he crossed into. However, he himself is weak, demonstrated by him being defeated by his classmate. Thirty minutes after, he killed the main antagonist, which is one of the most powerful characters. During the thirty minutes of film time, the movie was concentrating on events happening outside of the protagonist and does not mention anything about how Yuta is able to fly or use a powerful technique that only one clan in the entire world is able to use because of their bloodline or how he could instantly heal his friends. I am baffled by how he is able to do any of these abilities as it is literally impossible narratively in this world to use different kinds of abilities. It is explained by the character supposedly sacrificing his entire life to trade for this much power. Except, he didn’t even exchange his life after at all, and the stakes that made the final fight make sense were void.
The main antagonist and protagonist were very similar as both characters are so plain and boring that it made watching paint dry my new favorite Friday night activity. Suguru Geto, the villain of the movie, has the most contrived, two-dimensional motives ever. His goal is to “kill everyone who cannot see spirits”. Why? It's never explained in the movie! The antagonist's plain, unexplained motives, however, drive the entire climax and main fights in the movie. There is no nuance in any of his actions as his only character trait is being evil. Perfectly mirroring the protagonist’s only character trait as being a “good guy”.
Nothing is ever expanded on or properly explained because the movie takes no creative liberties of changing a few scenes from the manga or attempting to create a jumbled 4 chapter information dump into an actual narrative. For the manga of Jujutsu Kaisen Zero, it is understandable that some information is left out as it is already explained in the original manga of Jujutsu Kaisen, making it redundant to explain in a side story. For example, the morals of Suguru Geto are properly introduced and nuanced as he has his own backstory revealed. He has a reason for why he hates people that cannot see spirits and his reaction is then reasonable. However, to the anime-only watchers, this is the first time they have ever seen Geto in action. The only thing they know about Geto is that he is evil and strong. So, the movie should include why Geto is this way, so the climax can actually have meaning or a clash between 2 different morals.
I have been really harsh on the movie, but it does have its good points. The animation in the fight scenes is amazing. It lives up to the expectations that the anime has set up. There were no jaw-dropping scenes or anything, but the animation was good.
My main takeaway from Jujutsu Kaisen Zero: The Movie is that it's just a cash grab that was made to get money out of the hype of the anime. They saw a side story that could be adapted into a movie and they just put what was on the manga onto the big screen. Nothing was added to it and nothing was gained from watching it. All that was made was a movie about an incomplete story that does not help give context to characters we already know from the anime. The only redeeming quality of the movie was great animation, but compared to other anime blockbusters, it was average. I give this movie a 6 out of 10. The story was nonexistent, there were no likable characters, but it was an animation, and the kids watching it behind me in the theater were having a great time.

A quite exciting movie that is a prequel to the Jujutsu Kaisen series, with a story that leaves us in the dark but at the same time is quite entertaining.
The animation is impressive how it looks so good, the detail and the fluidity of it is in love with the sight, that is why the action scenes are so impressive to the point that they look beautiful (there are not so many but the ones that exist are worth the sorrow).
Although the story is entertaining, it leaves a lot to be desired, it could explain many things that were left unfinished, such as its ending, ... even though it is a prequel, it has nothing to do with the original series, that is why you can see it without having seen it before. anime, I think that at the same time it fell too short of what I had expected, a story that entertains and expands the horizons of the original series by explaining some of its unknowns, but from my point of view this film was created to get a little money and nothing more (we may see the main character of this film in the series soon, but from the point of view of the creation of this text, it has not come out at any time and neither is it referred to).
It is a quite entertaining movie with a dark theme that will keep you entertained for a long time and you will have a great time watching it.

Una película bastante emocionante que es precuela de la serie Jujutsu Kaisen, con una historia que nos deja en la penumbra pero que a la vez es bastante entretenida está.
La animación es impresionante el cómo se ve tan bien, el detalle y la fluidez de está enamora a la vista, por eso mismo las escenas de acción son tan impresionantes a tal punto de que se ven hermosas (no hay tantas pero las que hay valen la pena).
La historia aunque entretiene deja mucho que desear, pudo explicar muchas cosas que dejaron a medias como lo es su final, también aunque sea una precuela esta no tiene nada que ver con la serie original, por eso mismo la puedes ver sin haber visto antes el anime, creo que a la vez se quedo demasiado corto a lo que yo tenia esperado, una historia que entretiene y te expande los horizontes de la serie original explicándote algunas incógnitas de está, pero a mi punto de vista está película se creo para sacar un poco de dinero y nada más (puede que el personaje principal de esta película lo veamos próximamente en la serie pero desde el punto de vista de la creación de este texto no ha salido en ningún momento y tampoco se le hace referencia a esté).
Es una película bastante entretenida con una temática oscura que te mantendrá entretenido por un buen rato y te la pasarás genial al verla.
