Actually I didn’t plan to write my review until this movie had at least sunk in a little but here I am doing it anyway. But before that let me start off with a little story (don’t worry it won’t be too long). For some years now I’ve been watching the Detective Conan movies without expecting too much new and exciting stuff and that’s how I mostly feel about them: meh. Repetitive, full of unnecessary action scenes, too much Detective Boys and it’s not even canon. So they are not even close to the first movies. But this all changed today when I watched this ... movie. Is it the greatest one of all the Detective Conan movies out there? You’ll find out in my conclusion (but I’m trying my best to keep this review spoiler-free).
Story 8/10
So I’ve gotta admit that the Halloween theme is not my favorite and thus the reason I hesitated to watch this movie. But I do feel like the entire “dressing up” and celebrating Halloween is not that important to the plot itself except for some tricks that were pulled thanks to this. So I’ll let it slide. For the past movies it almost felt like the writers simply threw some stuff together but with this one I really like how the story is well woven together and almost to a point I’d call it genius (ALMOST because of course it has a lot of unrealistic action scenes as well which made me roll my eyes). Aside from the fact that at one point it was easy to figure out who was behind this crime, it still managed to keep me on the edge of my seat. Which was also thanks to certain characters contributing a lot to this movie (and I will get to that in a bit, so please bear with me patiently). And while I figured out certain aspects of this case early on, there were others still a mystery which made it a very interesting case to watch. At no point did it get boring. Seeing how Conan solved it and that this time around he actually had to rely on others to help him too, was refreshing to watch. (I’d get into more details but this would only spoil it). The only thing that really bugged me (again aside from the ridiculous action scenes) was the fact that Ai and Conan suddenly spoke a language which might never be mentioned again and which was played out as normal and no one bothered to question.
Characters 9/10
Probably one of the best aspects of this movie. I love Furuya so what should I say? I am biased. I also love his “gang” even though their sad backstory always grabs me emotionally. But I loved to see more of them. And whenever I think I can’t like him more they make him center of a movie. Although he’s as OP as Conan I liked to see a different side of him in this one (even more crazy but that’s fine). I also liked the focus on Matsuda. Of course the main characters were not different from usual and I really liked the parts with Takagi and Sato (especially one scene which is absolutely worth the watch). Also some of the characters introduced and specifically for this movie were great and there was one specific scene with Conan and one of the supporting characters that felt really emotional even though we just had one movie with these characters. The writers did a great job at pulling on some heartstrings that made me want to tear up (I didn’t but almost). Another character I’d like to mention is the villain. While in some aspects it might be the same with any other in this case the culprit did something I’d expect and almost hope from more of them. In most movies or episodes the culprits just admit defeat after being exposed and that’s it. In this case it’s interesting to see a slightly different turn of events and I really like this. It makes it even more exciting to watch and even adds some “salt” to that person. Also a little bonus: the Detective Boys (although kind of present in the movie) didn’t annoy me as much as usual. That’s something…
Animation 8/10
While I read some negative takes on this I think the animation is better than in some of the other recent movies. To me it was pretty good and made it even more enjoyable to watch.
Overall 9/10
I wouldn’t have thought that I’d enjoy this movie so much since I’ve been so used to getting more and more critical with these movies. While I did enjoy the 24th movie much better than the 23rd it still was slightly forgettable in the end. But I have the feeling it won’t be the case with this movie and I’ll definitely re-watch it. So is it my new favorite Detective Conan movie? No. But it might be among my favorites from the more recent era (movies 15-25). Along with movie 22 “Zero the Enforcer” (I really wish people couldn’t tell which characters I like the most). I’d totally recommend this movie to everyone who loves Detective Conan. It might be more enjoyable if you are at least a little familiar with this series but not necessarily. So please go ahead, grab some popcorn and enjoy this very nice movie :) ♥
