Manga 127790 Atarashii Ashi De Kakenukero

So basically this boy loses his leg right? And this hot businessman takes the opportunity and says “HEY LEMME GIVE U SUM” so he gets a cool prosthetic running leg n is like: “yoooo this shit hella cool” so he continues to run, like competitively and BOOM he’s rlly good n stuffffffff

Anyways that was my shit explanation of the manga into the rating nowwwww

Story: fresh, lowkey 9/10

Art: pretty normal but not ugly so 7/10

Characters: did I mention a hot businessman? Well lemme just say.. there’s a foiiiiine ass businessman, the mc’s cool too tho 10/10

... Enjoyment: yeah it was kinda inspiring idk 8/10

Overall: mmmhm if u wanna read it just do it’s pretty short 8/10

I want to begin this review with my conclusion; Atarashii Ashi de Kakenukero is TRULY a well-thoguht, documented and nicely developed manga, that, in my opinion, could have gone way further than 38 chapters.

As a person with a physical disability myself, I tend to lean into these kind of spocons about para-sports more than any other kind and, going into this manga, I was a bit skepticaL Spocons, and mostly any shonen that portrays diabilities tend to show those characters as physically weak yet with a great spirit, and it's getting BORING.

So, I expected one of those again, and I was ready to call ... it mid, but the fact that it went and throw 90% of that character archtype away for the MC surprised me for good. The moments where the prothetist (a typical over the top, super postive and dreamy guy) explains the details about that industry, the protheses, para-athletics, or event "ghost pain" are ACTUALLY accurate. Needless to say, that's a huge win for the author and the manga.

Art-wise, and character design-wise... It's a spocon for young people so, yes, average. Well drawn characters, places (I guess, never been in Japan). That's the only negative part of this series (apart from its length), the MC design it's easy to distinguish as he is the para-athlete but the rest, a redesign of a redesign, of a redesign, of a redesign... Id' say: one of the athletics club senpains reminds me of Tsuneo, the Doraemon's character.

To wrap this up, I think it could have gone further, yes. As any spocon there is a possibility for different archs: local, tournaments, qualifiers for nationals, nationals, overseas tournaments, para-olympics, etc. And I'd be happy if there were more chapters, but I think that would have played against itself. It'd have got into more detail about the industry and that is a point were the community divides. It would have lost a few readers along the way, 100% sure.

For me, 8/10 cause it's a GREAT manga to start with if you are interested into para-sports. If you want to keep going down this hill, next stop is REAL by Takehiko Inoue (Slam Dunk's author).

It is an encouraging story about the highschooler Shouta Kikuzato joining the track-and-field-club after loosing a leg.
A year of depression passed since a barely ever mentioned accident and Kikuzato has given up his former soccer-career, growing away from his best soccer-buddy and feeling misunderstood at home when he is approached by a stranger named Chidori. He reveals to be an specialist for artificals limps looking for an athlete to promote his new-founded company by donating his very first tournament-prothesis. So the two oft hem team up…
I liked that the story skipped the traumatizing part of loosing a limp and focused on the challenges after ... - such as dealing with a new perspective, struggeling with the opinions of others and fighting the own shortcomings while never giving up beeing ambitious.
That‘s the first manga I read that included COVID. Sadly thats also the reason for its rather rushed ending I guess. I would have loved to see(!) how far they could have progressed but I think the ending is ok as it is.

Despite or beacause all of that it is a very special kind of sports manga I can only recommand! :-)
