Manga 133081 Wind Breaker Reviews

I've had my fair share of shonen manga and anime. Born-and-bred reader and watcher of one piece, black clover, etc. I don't necessarily appreciate this type of animanga. They are good, sure, but they aren't THAT good, with the exception of one piece. Well, the thing about this manga is that it was the first manga too touch my heart. I, too, had an emo kid phase where I thought it was just me against the world. And then I begin to learn how to rely on the people around me. This manga teaches you to do exactly that. It teaches about one's morals, what ... they plan to do, how to carry it out. Not to mention, martial arts. I'm a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, so I relate too Suou-san very well. Now, heres the review.

Story: 8/10
I'm gonna be honest. This manga has a very cliche plot. But what it excels in is the premise. Gang wars are not a very common trope, thought it has a decent amount of people that do it. But it's onpoint. It doesn't have an unnecessary amount of gangs, there isn't any drugs, blah blah blah. It's just the school trying to fight it out, protecting their own town. It goes rather indepth into the characters during the fighting, showing many different strikes one after the other that is visually able to be seen. In fact, some of the backstories were so incredibly sad I shed a tear or two. It's not your typical 'Asta-Flashback-Powerup' guy from Black Clover. He doesn't magically gets a power up. He works hard for it. It doesn't just manifest in the battlefield. However, some might find that the fights are pointlessly, well, too thought-provoking, which I did. Some scenes were very uncalled for. I would have loved, loved, loved a romantic interest for the plot. It would have been fun to see how it plays out for Sakura, although it might impact the main focus of the manga. I can understand if the mangaka does not want to do it. One thing that baffles me, however, is that it's a school. There should be teachers around. All in all, Nii Satoru did a good job on the premise and plot.

Artstyle: 10/10
This is a martial arts manga. But this manga excels in it's depictions of many techniques that it shows. The back kicks, side kicks, roundhouse kicks, even the Judo throws are all splendidly drawn. Compared too other martial arts manga in which I have no clue to what is being done, this manga draws each technique spectacularly. It is awesome. Even in crowds, Nii Satoru somehow pulls of drawing double techniques really, really finely.
In the emotional scenes, it's impact is significant. He draws the correct facial expressions, not over or under exaggerated. The tears, the attention to the hair, the details all play a important role in the scenes impact, and boy, does Nii do it correctly. 10/10, great drawing and artstyle. Especially for a martial arts manga.

Characters: 9/10
The characters in the manga were really, really well written. You have your hot headed MC that actually LEARNS something at the end of the day and values his friendship with the cast, your coolheaded Judoka and strategist, the rival that he needs to work together with, the one guy who is useless trying to help, and the guy that is popular with girls. Tropey it may be, it is executed on point. The teamwork is like no other, and the characters are explored into, with their own backstory and convictions. Though, these backstories may only come later in the manga, I promise you, it is worth the wait to see how it plays out.

Overall, this manga is a solid 9/10. It is one of the best manga that I have ever read. A good mix of friendship, engaging plot, and artstyle that is legible for a martial arts manga, well thought out characters. This is definitely a must read.

Thanks to the growing success of Tokyo Revengers, furyo has been refreshed and finds again in the spotlight in spite of the kind of niche it is, no matter what we say. It is in this continuity that a new furyo manga more modern than what we have known until now is in our hands. Published in Pocket Magazine, Wind Breaker by Nii Satoru is one of these works.

We can consider this manga as a condensed version of the style which includes all the codes of the furyo style. We can feel the inspiration of several key titles of the genre in this work. ... As far as the chara-design is concerned, we are close to something very modern and very dynamic like Tokyo Revengers. The drawing style is almost the same but the author added a little more dynamism. The main story is greatly inspired by the manga Sugarless by Masami Hosokawa either in the whole or in the writing of the characters. As for the interactions between the characters, the author doesn't spare us the great speeches about friendship but like mangas like Rokudenashi Blues or Crows, we are on something more down to earth and simpler. It is on this point that I would have restraints since it gives dialogues much too flat and sometimes quite unnecessary. But it is a component of the furyo genre that is not unpleasant.

To summarize this manga it's a condensed version of everything that has been done in furyo these last years. There is not much original in its development but it remains very pleasant to read. The evolution of the manga is positive and so much to go towards something good. However I have a lot of reservations about the writing of the characters because we are clearly in the cliché.

(i promise only this first paragraph has to do with tokyo revengers, and i wont mention it again)

it's been a while since i read a manga so irredeemable that it moved me to write a review. i read tokyo revengers a few days ago and i really thought that i would never read a delinquent manga as bad as that ever again. wind breaker isn't 100% a delinquent manga, but it does kind of fall under the umbrella. tokyo revengers was bad in the sense that it was a trainwreck but i was at least compelled to keep reading it because i wanted to see ... what bullshit would happen next, what terrible writing decision would the author make to further ruin this already unsalvageable story. wind breaker is terrible because there isn't a single creative idea around, and as a result i had to force myself even to read this many chapters, all in the hopes that the author would learn how to write something at least slightly resembling a story.

the "delinquents" in wind breaker are only delinquents in the sense that there is a hierarchy in the school based on strength and the school itself has some fucking graffiti on it. otherwise, these characters are just fighters, not delinquents. they don't smoke, drink, shake anyone down, nothing. they're just cops. they all just patrol the town to keep villains away. they only fight the "bad guys" and the bad guys are always just cardboard cutouts of characters you've seen a million times before, except even a cardboard cutout has a 2nd and 3rd dimension.

the bad guys consist of guys who harass women, guys who stir shit up, and guys who are members of evil gangs, which are usually led by equally shallow characters that the author desperately wants to convince you have depth by giving them those generic psychopath eyes and a halfassed backstory borrowed from some better story you can vaguely remember. there is never any moral dilemma when fighting these villains. there is no challenge in beating up a guy who is weaker than you and also a worse person than you and whose immoral actions have seemingly no justification.

this would be fine if there were something else interesting about the story, but there's nothing here. this manga is hollow. no vibes. no characters. no atmosphere. the art is expertly illustrated but just because you're competent at anatomy and perspective doesn't make your art interesting. in the damn near 60 chapters i read, there was never a panel that took my breath away or even left the slightest impression on me. tomorrow i will try to remember a page, a scene, a moment, a character, a movement from this manga. i will fail. tails gets trolled is unironically a far superior work both despite and BECAUSE its art is so amateur. at least the author of that story has some measure of ambition.

the protagonists aren't much better than the antagonists, though. they each are allowed a grand total of 2 emotions that they can toggle between. any more is asking for too much. there is a constant halfassed effort at character development with the main character but because this is written like fanfiction, you never understand where it's trying to go. like his central character flaw was diagnosed and treated in the first chapter. it would be way more charming if the MC just acknowledged it and tried to overcome it but we have to sit through this tired, laboursome attempt at character progression. most of the time, the way the MC interacts with the world doesn't indicate some major character flaw, just a general social ineptitude. it should be treated like a cute little quirk rather than a crushing pain on his soul.

there is nothing you're getting from wind breaker that you couldn't otherwise get from a better work of art. if you want delinquent action, go read crows or drop or nanba mg5. shit, read out too. if you want delinquent comedy, go read a-bout or bebop highschool or read crows again. if you want delinquent drama go read yankee go to juku or blue spring. if you want a generic delinquent manga that does all that stuff a little bit worse but isn't nearly as boring as wind breaker, read clover or sugarless. neither of those manga is great, but it's several leagues ahead of wherever this is at. and last but not least, if you want to read a comic about a boy scout defending his city and defeating laughably evil villains, read some golden age superman. i swear, it's better than you think it is.

it's clear the mangaka is passionate about fashion. you can see it in the pages between chapters in each volume, and on their social media. this is very cool, and i wish they showed off more of their fashionable sensibilities in the story. i don't care much for their taste in fashion personally, it feels too much like safe, curated, social media brand friendly fashion, but at least it's something. if i could give any advice to them, i'd say read some books, go outside your comfort zone, look at a painting, be moved by something, and stop writing fanfiction.

I'm going straight to the point: this is VERY Shounen Jumpish.
We have a tsundere main character with a cool design, a tragic past and an unstoppable wish to fight strong people. He joins to the worst school in Shibuya just for fighting all the banchou in there, but surprise: this bad guys are heroes that save the day of the place they live from real banchou.

The best thing about the manga is the art, without doubts. The rest is a bunch of Shounen Jump cliché one after another, from characters to story. It seems like Tokyo Revengers had such an impact that Shounen Jump had ... to do his own banchou manga, but with all their usual cliché xD

I don't know how much it'll long, I'll keep reading it, hoping something gets me by surprise but I don't think that'll happen.

At the time of writing this review, I have completed 32 chapters and 4 volumes of this manga. I must say that this manga is an extreme cliche shounen manga. The plot is average at most and those who have read Tokyo Revengers or watched the anime will find that the fights in this manga are better portrayed in this manga than Tokyo Revengers. I can also say that if Tokyo Revengers shows some sadism, this manga is completely opposite as of now and is completely trying to cancel the sadism from people. The positivity is good, but for people who are seinen fans, it ... will become too boring and will drop this manga after sometime.

Though I must say that one point to be noticed is that the art style of this manga is really good as it is with many mangas released in the recent years. I really loved how the mangaka kept the art clean. Presently only the art style is only keeping me from dropping this manga.

This manga doesn't know the concept of police. It's just about thugs and their areas and different characters and their back story, I mean it's not bad but logically it's not good either maybe I'm not a fan of this concept of gangs and all I didn't even liked Tokyo revengers. Till now they have not focused on backstory of MC but they will in future so I will give them a benefit of doubt for that part.

Story - I would say it's alright
Characters - This has some interesting characters and well-defined ones.

Overall shut your brain and read it ... then you might get hooked on it
