Positive cheerful protagonist thrust into a new world only to have his spirit absolutely crushed. Both involve the main character being disillusioned to the horrors of the world around them and thrust into despair.

"Ima, Soko ni Iru Boku" is an OG isekai from a time long before everyone and their dog was trying to write one themselves. It's also another excellent example of our protagonist getting transported to another world and having a really bad time as a simple powerless guy way out of his element in another world. This world he finds himself in is a full blown bleak-as-fuck dystopia where he tries to stand up for others while enduring torture, hunger, and the horrors of war the whole time.

Re zero is one of the few isekai that deals with themes resembling anything darker than the sun. Personally the isekai genre is a constant honeypot trap in my watching experience, I frequently watch them regardless of how sure I am that they are going to blow massive chunks. I do so because of how much I believe in the genre, I have this belief because of shows like Now and Then here and There (Ima, Soko ni Iru Boku). I'd warn you that it deals with some things that are beyond the scope of what re zero is willing to present to you, however
