Two masterpieces with painful and dramatic stories. Le Chevalier D'eon is based on historic events, while Gankutsuou on famous book. The ending in both anime isn't quite a happy ending. Compared, Le Chevalier D'eon is much more dramatic but also I would say the better one from these two.

While Le Chevalier retells history, Gankutsuou retells a famous novel. Both have a wide range of characters, each moved by a different and deep feeling, specially that of vengeance. They share the same feel, and the plot development is similar.

Haven't gotten enough of France in your anime yet? One is based on a classic French novel by Alexandre Dumas, and the other is loosely based on pre-French Revolution history. Both also contain elements of magic, mystery and political intrigue. Keep in mind, these are also both LOOSE adaptations, so be prepared for a few plot-deviations and historical inaccuracies. They're still great series though.

There's just something about anime that take place in France. I think of Le Chevalier D'Eon, Rose of Versailles, and a personal favorite of mine Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo. Anime set in France just seen to have so much class and elegance that make them differ from other series. D'Eon and Gankutsuou share quite a few similarities, that can go as far as their unique choices of art style, seemless way of storytelling, memorable characters, and having absolutely exquisite english dubs. I feel the shows must be watched in dub for the reason of the dialogue in English is just filled with so
