Set in MMORPG/MMORPG-like world, the main character specializes in shield class with abilities specialized for defense. They keep gaining new skills by fighting and fullfiling hidden requirements. Just be warned that one is moe and the other one is angst.
The protagonist specializes in defense and is accompanied by an ensemble of supporting characters. The route however is vastly different. Both animes will have your RPG craving satisfied.
The clear similarity to mention is that both of the main characters specialise in shields, tanking and support rather than being an overpowered damage character that we generally get plenty of. However, while the MC of Rise of the Shield Hero (Tate no Yūsha no Nariagari) is forced into having a shield with no say in the matter and looked down upon for it, the MC of Bofuri (Itai no wa Iya nano de Bougyoryoku ni Kyokufuri Shitai to Omoimasu) willingly chooses a shield and puts all of her skill points into defence, largely because of her unfamiliarity in the game she's playing.
