Kaiba
A protagonist and a comrade, traveling through planets/countries. On their journey, they meet people who live in these places, and learn the different customs, cultures or tragedies they experience, trivializing the world we live in.

Both series feature a main character that travels from place to place, learning more about that place and the people in it along the way. Instead of being a main component of the plot, the protagonists instead act as eyes through which the viewer can observe the stories of other characters.

Both are abstract animes which are extremely thought provoking, and the art style of kaiba is vaguely similar to that of Kino no Tabi.

Psychological and sociological journey through distopian worlds/countries. Settings are bit different, we got steampunk in Kino's and surrealistic cyberpunk in Kaiba. Despite childish characters, series are made for adults.

Two atmospheric shows that use compelling settings and soundtracks to keep the viewer absorbed.

These anime share similar emotional undertones. Both portray the darkness of human nature through youthful animation and storytelling; although Kaiba's art is much more peculiar.

stoic traveller protagonist, frank portrayal of world and behavior

Very atmospheric series obout a travelling protagonist that meets various characters and mixes in their fate. Both series are highly packed with philosophical themes.

These anime both make you think a lot. The protagonists come into different strange areas/ planets where they face very human problems. Watching the animes gives you the chance to go on a journey with the protagonists and maybe see new aspects of human nature. Also (at least for me) both animes are rather hard to get into in the beginning.

The main character travels aimlessly between various microcosmic societies, each with its own culture and flaws. They end up learning about the struggles of the people of the places that they visit, often caused by the oppression of the societies in which they live. This format allows both anime to be quite non-linear and episodic, but Kaiba is more plot-driven than Kino.
