They're both about ambitious, tactical geniuses, although LotGH is a much more grounded & believable series imo.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes or Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu is the more mature version of Code Geass. You will find a mass of Lelouch-like characters. The story is better written - means that they are not so much plotholes. You won't find so stupid ideology in this OVA-series.

Both have philsophical themed storytelling with a sci fi backdrop and government vs government ideal clash over what is thought to be right kind of storytelling too with a charasimatic lead character as well too.
