Both shows use a dark theme covered up with a cute atmosphere. The main characters are children, which must fight to survive in this cruel world.

Both seem like your run-of-the-mill moe-moe anime, but beneath that is a thriller-mystery with some very dark themes. (PS: ignore the fact that I dropped the Neverland anime - I just preferred the manga).

Both anime can be summed up as "more than meets the eye". Madoka Magica and Promised Neverland use a more cutesy, easily recognisable and seemingly upbeat artstyle as a contrast to an emotion-and-thrill packed plot. Also, they have beyond awesome direction, lots of details per episode and magnificent music and voice acting. Neverland has yet to finish airing, but these are what I judge to be the shared qualities with Madoka Magica,

If you enjoy the "starts cute but darker than it seems" concept, then check out Madoka as well. Both shows play with the theme of youth and existential crisis.

Deception. Madoka Magica and TPN are both anime where characters are being deceived in their peculiar lives. Both anime start off at ignorance is bliss stage due to the connotations of their life, then as become more and more aware of what surrounds them and the truth in their lives. Where Madoka Magica is a story that presents the struggles of being a magical girl, TPN is a fight against the world they live in. All in all, it is fighting for your life in these anime.

Both Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica and Yakusoku no Neverland look cute at first sight, but appearances aren’t everything, as these two anime are much darker than they initially appear. The plot of both anime involve children trying to survive a dark world, and there’s definitely some similarities in the characters, with Madoka being similar to Emma and Homura being similar to Ray. If you want short anime with interesting and dark storylines, these two are your best bet. Just avoid the second season of Yakusoku no Neverland, and you’ll be fine!

Both are about young girls living happy innocent lives until something happens that turns the show into a psychological drama. Both are very sad at times and the music in both is unique powerful.

Psychologically disturbing, features young children as the protagonist, dark reality disguised as a utopia, keeps you on the edge of your seat.
