Both stories are in a fantasy setting that follow a group of children and their difficult adventures. Both of these anime feature cute kids put in traumatizing situations, although +Anima has a noticeably lighter tone than Made in Abyss. Their art styles are similarly cute, and a lot of effort is put in by both mangaka to set up worldbuilding, so readers can have a sense of discovery as they read each manga.
