As someone who just binged all the chapters up to the most recent chapter 86 of Koi to Uso, let me just say this manga is very frustrating. It's good but it's also very frustrating...

The initial story is interesting. Age 16, you get assigned a marriage partner using genetic, psychological, and a variety of other data (Go Science!) in order to find a perfect match and combat the declining birth rates in Japan.

The art is fantastic, though the trade-off for that is that the chapters are extremely short.

The frustrating aspect is that the MC is so stubbornly in love with Grill 1 ... despite the fact that the government sent him a notice that he will marry Grill 2.

Problems arise because Grill 1 is also in love with MC, but she tries to do the right thing and keep that as a memory and move on with life. MC ends up crawling back to Grill 1, neglects Grill 2 (Who is extremely accommodating towards the MC and a better choice but just gets tossed aside basically), and MC breaks Grill 1's resolve to do the best thing for both of them so many times. He's so oblivious to what the right thing to do and is making matters much worse. He's made both Grills cry already. MC is a jerk.

Oh and MC's bestie is probably gay for him.

If you're hoping for an in depth detailed review, go somewhere else. Or better yet read it yourself; perhaps you'll understand how much of a slog it felt like to me...

eventually that is. I came in with a decently open mind. I can't say I loved it but it didn't bore me the hell out like Infection or World's End Harem. Though they're not in the same category but regardless, the point is that I read quite a bit, beyond chapter 100 but around 150, I just couldn't anymore. I lost all interest in every detail and character, most of whom were pretty forgettable. That ... one guy that's probably gay but really popular, the generic pussy main character, cow tits girl, and that one petite girl. Point is I lost interest as it was boring and monotonous. Perhaps others like something like this; I could've but this one fell flat for me.

I'm so conflicted over how to score this manga. After reading 237 chapters, it has both major flaws and some really great strengths.

There are several characters for whom the character writing is exceptional--for me, the stand-out ones are Nisaka Yuusuke and the two minor characters Yajima and Ichigo. Nisaka in particular has, in my personal opinion, one of the best written arcs I've ever seen for a side character. For both him and several other characters, their emotions and behavior feel realistic and more importantly, heart-wrenching and heart-warming.

The problem lies in the main pairing: Misaki and Nejima. Let me start by saying I LOVE ... romance fiction. I absolutely adore childhood friends to lovers as a trope. Yet right off the bat these two--who in this story are supposed to represent "true love", are stated to barely have interacted with each other besides a few words in the 7 or so years they've known each other previous to the start of the story. Which makes their extreme dedication to each other and relationship over all feel extremely unrealistic and contrived, even by "love at first sight" standards. They don't seem to share any interests and know next to nothing about each other. For a manga that's purportedly about questioning and examining the different kinds of love, you'd think this would be the perfect opportunity to turn this trope on its head, yet it seems to never really be critical of this important detail. Their very rare cute moments are overshadowed by constant, burdensome drama. And after 237 chapters, there has been next to no development between them beyond the first few chapters. Their arc is incredibly repetitive and drawn out, to the point of frustration and boredom. If it weren't for a few side characters, I would've dropped it early on.

Because Misaki and Nejima (as well as Lilina, whose writing is significantly better-paced) unfortunately make up the main pairing, the writing overall comes off overly drawn-out with drama that feels forced. There are also several scenes where a very dramatic event will pop up randomly for a single chapter or two for the sake of forcing characters to interact, never to be addressed again in the plot.

Although I really enjoyed a few side character's arcs and developments, I honestly can't say for sure if I'd recommend someone slogging through this many chapters purely for their sake. I would at least say maybe to wait until the manga is finished publishing because many of the story arcs are very long and I don't think I'd be able to sit through some of the more tedious arcs myself if I had to wait between chapters that largely repeat themselves.

So I've read all the chapters released (something like 217) and I have to say this book is like, so on the fence on being a great manga, but it can only be considered very good to me due to a couple reasons, but I'll get to that in a minute.

Story: The story is unique. At 16, you're assigned a spouse who you are ~essentially~ forced to marry. So love before this assigned person is forbidden and is looked down upon. Enter Neji, a 16 year old boy who has been in love with a classmate since grade 5. Before his 16th birthday he confesses ... his love to her, and so does she. Yet, he receives his notice from the government and gets assigned a stranger as his wife. a lovely love triangle right? right. Now, I am a big fan of heavy emotion, all that. First love? Dude I'm in. Crying? I'm all for it. So when I read the first few chapters, I thought "oh man, heartbreak is written all over this and I'm so down". Now, the writing itself is really good. The story telling is really good. Instead, I'll give you why I'm only giving it a 8/10. First off, things are a tiny bit slow. Some stuff gets dragged, and it could go quicker. Secondly, there's a lot of kissing. No, I'm not knocking off points for making out, instead it's the LACK of sexual progression. The emotions are real, so lets make the relationships and sexual frustration real too right? I mean shit, these are teenagers. I'm not asking for smut lol, I'm asking for once in a while, something gets a bit steamy. That's all.

Art: I know it's not super conventional art, since it's kind of big eyes, small hands, cutesy art, but once you get used to it, it's great. You just see it as it is and the art has a lot of detail in it. The thing is, since there's quite a bit of serious undertone with the subject matter (being forbidden to marry someone who you've loved for 5 years), the art can sometimes make it feel like you're reading a light hearted comedy. Nah man! I wanna cry! Keep it serious lol.

Character: The characters are some of the best written characters I've read in a while. The depth to the characters, the background stories (Nisaka for example was one of the best written background arc's I've ever seen). There are however some things that were odd and never explained as to why a seemingly nice character says something out of the pocket, but I think that kind of keeps that character loose and not predictable, which is nice to have because you can't predict everything that's going to happen.

Overall, this is an enjoyable manga. Not sure how much longer I'm going to enjoy it cause after 217 chapters, they're beginning to beat a dead horse, but hey, I'm patiently waiting for the next chapter and that's all that matters.

Good Manga, 2 different endings. Shame there was no space for a third, alternative ending :P

Sometimes I like to think I'm living in this Manga/Anime as Nejima. Defo would make some other choices, especially career wise, but would definitely end up with the best waifu, Ririna :)

What happens, when a guy gets governmental notice about his future wife being chosen, but falls in love with another girl? The story follows this specific struggle as its main focus.
Sounds cool and all that… until reaching around 1/4 of the manga, when I realized it all starts getting noticeably worse and is slowly falling apart.

Specifically the dialogues. The conversations between characters lead almost nowhere. It is rare to find a meaningful talk and it takes way too long to have some progress. It contains many events that could be avoided (or at least put together). After some time, it completely loses a proper direction.

The ... artstyle looks very nice. I find the looks of the characters appealing (specifically those big eyes; way too big even by anime/manga standards, but it has its charm).
The problem is again with the dialogues from the perspective ‘art-to-text ratio’. I find it too dense with texts. Sometimes I felt like I was reading light novel, not manga. And, as mentioned, given that the dialogues are pretty boring, this creates very bad synergy.

To conclude it, the original premise sounded very good. Then the story started getting into dead-ends and further into a mess.
The only viable solution was to create two alternative endings to conclude the story and conveniently avoid picking only one girl over the other. And yet still, as it turned out, only one ending was really worthwhile; the other one felt forced in my opinion (not spoiling which, of course). So even in the end it got half-butchered.

Not totally bad manga, but painful to finish. I can’t recommend. Still, if you like romance stories, you may enjoy it way more that I did.

I didn't expected this story to be very good, but as far as I read I en up being quite surprised.

Let's start speaking about the characters. I think that they are quite good in general, all of them have something different to tell to the reader, and at least for me that makes the story interesting. I also really like the way that each one of them aren't perfect and have clearly things to learn.

By the way the main character is a young high school guy that doesn't really understand what he is doing and what he is feeling. He is trying to do the ... right thing but without really knowing what is the right thing. Nothing really special or too original but in the context of the story it works just fine.

Regarding the main plot I just like the topic and how it is developed. In this manga the high school relationships are more than usual, they are something that can determinate the future of the characters in a very extreme way. This is mostly because in the universe of this story all the partners are chosen by the state and the penalties for going against this rule is a future that will turn around hardship. So the characters are going to make their decisions taking into account hard consequences. This probably doesn't seems as the most original thing ever, but to be honest I don't care, it is not dragging back my reading experience at any point.

I would say then that because of the characters and the story this manga makes me want to keep reading.

On the other hand, well, this is clearly not high level literature, to say it simply I think that this story is written quite badly. In a lot of moments it can be a very incoherent, making characters pop-up in the good moment in the good spot without any actual reason, and this happens a lot. I would say also that the rules of the partners matching seems to me quite unclear, and it shouldn't be the case. To be honest I think that this is what is dragging back the story making it too unrealistic and weird.

I am just sad when a manga I like start having flaws, but to be honest this doesn't make it unreadable. As I said before this manga has also a lot of good points. At the end of the day if you like to read about human feelings and teen romances go ahead, I am pretty sure that you are gonna enjoy your reading.

I read the first 5 volumes, 105 chapters in total. And I was a bit disappointed. I was expecting some huge drama. Something to happen that would make it interesting, but it didn't really.

It starts off with this kind of interesting concept of an organized marriage and stuff. And the first scene is a kiss scene, so you think it'll probably be mature and the characters won't be.. idk what to call it... but I guess innocent? naïve? purely goodwilled? But... once the MC gets his planned partner they all become friends. And that in itself isn't bad, but the girls don't really stand up ... for themselves. And that turns it into a harem, instead of a romance drama.

And every now and then something a little dramatic happens. And there are moments where they don't see eachother or where they don't text eachother for a long time. But besides saying that off-screen they still have good times. I did read 105 chapters of it after all (although most chapters are under 10 pages), so it's not *that* bad. Just a problem that I was waiting for something to spice it up in a way that wasn't happening.

Anyway, if you don't mind a love triangle with a bit of a bland protagonist and want to see him having drama with the girls, you could like it. But if you're looking for something more mature, I wouldn't read this.

my favorite story to date, first of all I wanted to congratulate the aurtorx for his incredible genius to create dialogues and incredible characters. I recommend reading this manga because of how real the characters who experience real emotions and with meaning feel, I loved it.
The most realistic character with respect to his personality seemed to me to be between Nisaka or Lilina since both have a development and an outcome. Nisaka for his part a boy who falls in love falls out of love and in the end has an evolution, the same with Lilina.
Nejima that even knowing the great favor that Misaki ... did him (according to which I think is the true end) He decides to be with Lilina since he has realized his true feelings. Although it may seem that it was due to pressure, this is not the case because we see a development of Nejima's love for Lilina.

I don’t care about Nejima. I care even less about Lilina and Misaki. Who I really care about is Nisaka. He is the only reason I read this, after watching the anime I needed to know what happens to him. Every other part of the story is awful but Nisaka carries the whole thing. He is very well done and enjoyable and I love the story they gave for him and also how supportive the whole system is of homosexuality like that’s pretty progressive of them. Overall I’d say read this if you care about Nisaka a lot and are willing to put up with ... Nejima’s bullshit and leading everyone on. Justice for Nisaka.

This is such an under-rated manga. I got hooked on this manga from chapter one and now I am currently around chapter 275. Yes, some chapters are a bit boring and small. But, this is such an upstanding manga. I really didn't have high expectations while reading this manga but its so interesting, just wanted to know what happens next.

STORY-
The manga has some panels which makes you wonder things and you ask yourself "why?" or "maybe this is the reason". It doesn't give ... you the answers so quick. Its frustrating but you want to read more. meme >> "I don't need sleep, I need answers."
The manga is wholesome and sometimes you feel like shits about to hit the fan. Its an easy to read manga and the art is pretty good too. I sense a bit of ntr coming ahead, but we still don't know. Now we play the waiting game.

The characters are cute, they have good intentions. They are the characters which makes reading fun and interesting. I really have nothing else to say about the characters, they are simple and admirable.

A Short Summary-

If you are hesitant to read this then just go ahead and read the manga. The other reviews on this manga are old and rated this manga a bit low, the reason being that the story didn't unravel a lot in that time. The manga is wholesome, but you get moments like "shits about to hit the fan moments." I binged this manga like hell and I want more.

I believe the two routes to be the author's answer to "What is Love?", but as two forms.

Ririna, whose love began as a rabid curiosity for an emotion she didn't believe she possessed, grew into a painfully intense love for Yukari. Her love mirrors her sincerity, and she never shied from her feelings once she realized she couldn't run away from them anymore. She spent her days in angst, bracing herself for the eventual rejetion (in her mind, at least) by the man who taught her how to see color in her dull world. Ririna's route is a portrayal of mature love, of selfless love. Ririna loved Yukari unconditionally, fully expecting her love to never bear fruition from the other party. Her expressions in the final chapters are gentle (in contrast to Takasaki's first turbid ones), but they are set ablaze when her love is fulfilled. The timeskip is five years later, more than Misaki's two years, which further strengthens the idea that their love will stand the test of time; a peerless Yukari marriage as calculated by the government.

Misaki's love is tumultous; her love for Yukari is passionate, and I'd go as far as to call it blinding to her. It brought her out from when she was at her lowest, and her heart now beat solely for Yukari. She did not hesitate to make THE choice, damning herself to a life of pain. Time might have mellowed her passion, but I personally believe that's naivete. Misaki's love bloomed the more she was with Yukari, and even though it's was a love destined to shatter, the dazzling light of that glass-like passion strengthened her feelings for him - a love very reminiscent of youthful love. She fell for him harder and deeper. Her route's chapters show us how her love warped her; she hated one of her closest friends, she hated the one for whom she lived her life. But Yukari faced her head-on, and in what can only be termed as immature recklessness, chose his present impassioned feelings over a future that was guaranteed to be a fulfilling one. He took her resolve head on, clashing against her torrentious feelings, and finally breaking through the fears Misaki held.

But is that really wrong? Is it wrong to choose an immature love, which held even the possibility of death, over a safe future? I believe Misaki is the author's answer to a love that simply cannot come true. There are too many factors at play which make choosing Misaki a 'mistake' - but can you deny the strength of your feelings for a person you longed for nearly every waking moment since you met them? A 'wrong love' is a nonsensical idea. There is no guarantee Misaki and Yukari's love would work out; but is there a guarantee that it won't? If I wanted to come out of my stupor after reading this intense piece of literature, Ririna's route is the only one that I would accept. But, like Misaki's love, my feelings towards her emotions are as intense as they can ever be, fleeting as they may. My tears held the same weight as they poured out of my eyes when I was swayed by both of the girl's emotions.

Koi to Uso is a wondrous portrayal of love, one unlike anything I've ever experienced before.

Pretty good

Overall a very nice read. The characters are pretty well thought out and the setting is pretty interesting. And the topics brought up are pretty heavy, but even still it does get you thinking. Plus, each main heroine gets their own ending so whoever your waifu is they'll be happy.

There are some downsides though, the Yukari system is honestly the main reason this is any good, without it, it's just a regular boring rom-com. The chapters are also a bit short and there's a bit too much-unneeded dialogue to the point where you just get fed up and skip the panel. I feel ... that a lot of it could also not have been made and it would have gotten the same results.

I did write more on the downsides, but if you're looking for something that's pretty interesting and that you can spend a couple of days reading (two if you're me) then this is a great manga that I would highly recommend. Sadly no Nisaka ending though :(

What the fuck is wrong with the MC like broo how dumb can you be??????? You clearly love Ririna and she also loves you so what the fuck is the problem???? I get that you also love Misaki but what the fuck either way you can't marry her because she already has a partner once she turns 18 like bro grow up.

Every fucking time Ririna is showing emotion he's like " I love Ririna but I also love Takasaki" like bro just choose Ririna. I also don't like how Ririna was like " I'll support you and Misaki" and then proceeds on ... telling them to kiss each other. Like bro is it just me or are the characters here stupid as fuck.(It's probably just me)

And there's Nejima suddenly becoming gay by kissing the guy that has a crush on him that's also his bestfriend, like my guy wants to fix the problem by making it worse. It was probably better if the Manga stopped where the Anime finished like the ending of the anime was better than the manga continuation. And like the art is 10 times fucking better than the fucking decisions they make.

Won't spoil anything yet but I feel like that the Manga is very Underrated and often overlooked at by people because of the Crappy Anime. It might feel sluggish and might take a long time but it's a good read and I 100% Recommend it.

Ending is Unsatisfying to me, It felt like it was Rushed. I had a Feeling that the Author goal was Originally a single Ending (Ririna to Marry Yukari) and for the Manga to last a bit Longer I'd say maybe 1 more Volume but either because of a lack of time or just feeling stuck Drawing the same Manga for 6 Year it got 2 Ending and both in my Opinion are Unsatisfying.

Misaki Route : She was the Girl that I had wanted to win Yukari and she did and this is the Ending that I accept although knowing that he can Die at any time is why I said that the Ending was not very satisfying, i had wished for a happy ending that maybe there could've been another way for a Cure but there was no other way which disappoint me and this ending just doesn't feel like the best nor the Happiest Ending.

Ririna Route : the Ending that I had a problem with I felt like the Author was really trying to pander to both side by making Misaki somehow Happy? Like she just tried to kill herself because of Ririna marrying Yukari but somehow she just accepts it??? I felt like there was a huge bias for this route Since everybody is essentially happy while on the Misaki route Ririna is left out alone hating Yukari and that Yukari can die at any time.


I know what you're probably saying. "It doesn't have to be a happy ending to be good" or something like that and I agree Scum's Wish was a good example and I enjoyed that but the ending just felt Half-Assed in Misaki route Ririna was Depressed because Yukari didn't choose her but somehow in Ririna's Route Misaki is completely fine with Yukari Marrying Ririna despite literally attempting to kill her self? Ending was just pretty meh but hey at least we got a Misaki Route which was enough to satisfy me but not very satisfying.

Coming from the Anime, I expected a lot from the manga. The few episodes that the anime had introcued many interesting characters, and made me want to know more about them. Unfortuntaly, none of my expectations have been met. I've read a few Shoujo, and I can say that the issues with this manga don't stem from the genre in general.
TLDR; if you're looking for a nice Romance to read, read something else. The only person I see this manga being good for is someone who just wants to read something with light drama and fanservice, if you care about storytelling and characters, this isn't ... for you.

Characters: 4/10
First, I want to talk about the characters- because despite my incoming harsh critique of a lot of other things in the manga, there were actually interesting characters, like Nisaka. Nisaka's mere existence clashes with the governmental system. It makes him a neat in-between, since he's suffering from this system in multiple ways. I was excited to find out how the story would deal with this. But instead, I was greeted with "oh yeah, it's pretty much the same except you have issues finding jobs. You'll still get assigned a partner doesn't really matter lol". This was probably one of the most disappointing things in the story for me, simply because of how much potential was wasted with Nisaka. But here's the issue: Nisaka is nothing but a side character, and he's more likeable than the actual main character.

Speaking of which, Nejima was probably the most annoying Romance manga MC I've seen in a good bit. Now, don't get me wrong, it's hard to find a good manga MC these days anyways, but he stood out to me. His inability to take action, his cowardice and his lack of personality are a spectre haunting the manga. And anyone reading this before finishing the manga should be warned that none of this will get better. He has so little personality that his only personality is that he's interested in weird rocks. The chapters in which he isn't present feel like a long due weekend after a hard week of work. What makes him diffferent is that he doesn't have a redeeming quality- not interesting from the get-go, and certainly not any more interesting at the end. Atleast other cowards in Manga have some sort of redeeming quality. Like, atleast Subaru (RE:Zero) is trying to learn. Atleast Jonathan (JJBA: phantom blood) is defined by his kindness, and can be likeable despite how boring he is. Jonathan managed to be more memorable than Nejima, even though we only saw Jonathan for nine episodes, which should tell you plenty about Nejima. I think he doesn't have a strong will, or strong feelings about anything/anyone in that matter I think the fact that his love for Misaka was swayed so quickly when Ririna showed up just shows how he never had strong enough feelngs for either, and this really shows in the later chapters.

The two main girls were fine. I personally prefered Ririna for her boldness and honesty. She's like the opposite of Nejima at the start, unlike Misaka, who plays directly into the manga's pattern of annoying coward, to put it bluntly. Of course, there's a lot more to her character, but I generally found her self-sacrificialessness (is that a word?) and desperation for Nejima to chase after her to be an obstacle to the story, not a part of it. Since Nisaka is the only character I ever felt invested in while reading this, I'll give the characters a 2/10. I'll delve a little deeper into the three main characters (Nejima, Ririna and Misaki) in the next segment, the story.

Story: 2/10
This is my main gripe with the manga. It's what you see with many manga nowadays: Good concept, bad execution. So, if you've read the sypnosis, you know that the gonvernment assigns you a partner that you will be with for the rest of your life once you turn sixteen. Unfortunately, our main character Nejima already has a crush on a girl. He confesses to her on midnight, but gets assigned to a different girl.
Now, this might spark an interesting story. Maybe a story with the lesson that you can't know what exactly what you want from life at the mere age of sixteen, that the government can't ever know who you are on an individual level in the first place, and that only you yourself can truly know what is best for you. That is, if this was a good story. None of the above-mentioned conflicts ever get an in-depth analysation in the manga. Of course, you'll passingly see characters annoyed with this (especially at the start) but that's kind of it. The story introduces something it calls bad, and then never explains why it's bad. And, of course, this is a Shoujo, so I shouldn't be expecting deep socio-political analysis, but you should atleast try to engage with the univerese you yourself have created.

Nejima still gets to be close to Misaka, despite his assignment, and we never see what exact hardship he would face if he rejected his assigned partner. This manga suffers severly from the opposite of show don't tell: The plot will tell you about consequences that could potentially happen, but you never actually get to see these consequences, which makes it feel as if the governmental assignments didn't even exist.

Another thing I want to mention in this segment is "Misaka's secret"- ever since the first few chapters, the reader will know that Misaka has some kind of secret. This secret is... Very stupid. I think the issue isn't the secret itself, but the build up to the secret. With the amount of secrecy and mystery surrounding this secret that was built up over hours of reading, nothing could ever live up it. No plot-twist is cardinal enough to allow for such a long, draging, and tedious amount of wait. Her secret doesn't make sense from a character stand-point (aka why the fuck would anyone ever do that) and doesn't feel like a cool little plost twist. I've mentioned this before, but the manga makes it feel like Misaka is an obstacle. She's not a character to be explored, she's something that's in the way (especially in the way of Nejima's character development), and it stays like that until maybe the last few chapters. At first, I was interested in what Misaka was hiding, but by the end I just wanted to get it over with.

In retrospect, I think what destroyed the manga is the author's need to give the fans what they want- which is why if you look up the manga, you'll realize it has two endings. That's right, you just wasted hours reading a crapy, tropy romance manga, and you don't even get a satisfying conclusion. You get something much worse. This might also be why the manga drags on and on with unneccessary arcs that do nothing.

This manga in general is for people whose brain is fully turned off while reading, which isn't a bad thing- sometimes you just want to read or watch something to get your mind off of things. Sometimes you just want a nonsensical drama with random fanservice. But for the people who are looking for intricate drama, and something that is fun to theorize and think about, this isn't it. There are many romance mangas that do this well, unfortunately this isn't one of them. There really isn't anything to say about the story other than "oh look, something happened!", but it still had some fun parts to read, like Nisaka's arc, which explained his character and criticized the system a little bit. The art was also pretty good, just the usual shoujo artstyle. The thing is, usually I like all media I consume since I atleast had some fun reading it. This is an exception, because the only reason I read through it all was to find out what happens in the end, so unfortunately I can't even say that I enjoyed reading it, since the pacing is as slow as a snail. All in all, I'll give this a 4/10.
